California is a big state and the climate varies considerably. So the city truly does matter. The Central Coast is my favorite. Right around San Luis Obispo.

have lived in San Diego all of my life (25 years). Needless to say, it is a nice place. Usually cool people (by the beach areas) but a lot of rude arrogant jerks also. Traffic is not as bad as LA, so don't listen to those comments. SF traffic is pretty bad, a little worse than san diego traffic. Weather is nice, but you cant really enjoy the beach all that often because the cost of living is so high and you'll be at work trying to keep your head above water. Northern cali is wayyyyyyyyy better (i agree with the person who said that). much more laid back, not so much a of a "concrete jungle" up there. So Cal is getting busier and busier, which is why I am looking to move up to way way northern california (humboldt area).

You're gonna get a lot of smart-@ss answers, but I can tell you that I loved living there! And even though I don't anymore, I have friends who've moved there and THEY love living there. I don't care if it's SF (where I have lots of friends) or LA (where I lived) or San Diego, the state is just fantastic. So much to do - California isn't a state, it's a nation-state, with the greatest diversity of people on the face of the earth. The weather is fantastic, and you can snow-ski in the morning and sail or surf in the afternoon.

Expensive, to be sure, but a great, great place.

California (especially from San Diego to San Francisco) literally has THE best and most mild weather in the World. However, it's very expensive. BUT - that is why people pay to live here. Sometimes we have a beautiful 70 degree weather day on say, Thanksgiving for example. It's great.

It honestly depends which city...California is the size of New Zealand.

Generally though it's one of the best states, just expensive!!! Make sure you understand the cost of homes or rent prices.

I love San Francisco and the cities around it such as San Jose, Santa Rosa, Napa, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz.

San Diego is also very nice and more affordable.

I lived in the LA area for 6 years and then the Fresno area for 14, but moved to the Midwest 7 months ago. Here is my input:

The good stuff:

The ocean, many amusement parks, Yosemite and Sequoia National parks are beautiful. Good job market in the bigger cities (San Diego, LA, SF)

The bad stuff:

Traffic is Hell anywhere near LA, San Diego, or SF Bay area.

Cost of housing is out of sight. In LA, SF, and San Diego areas its $400K and up - even for a small, old house. In the Fresno area (6th largest city) you might find an old junker in the $275K range.

Gangs, crime, pornography, and drugs are as bad in LA as anywhere in the country.

Many of the beaches are too disgusting to even think of swimming at.

LA and Fresno are the #1 and #2 worst air quality cities in the US.

Summary:

If you are young and single - yea, live in California for awhile - have fun.

If you are married with kids - there are many more wholesome places to raise a family.

I was born and raised in San Jose, CA. It was great in the 60's & 70's got married and moved out of state.

15 or so years later I moved back to CA to Sacramento--Great opportunities there and only an hour or so from Tahoe & Reno!

Northern CA is 100% better than Southern (sorry, don't mean to offend, I was brought up in No. CA)

You need to come with an open mind and plenty of money. :P It's beautiful here but EXPENSIVE. (I live in Los Angeles and pay close to $1000/mo for a basic studio apartment.) SF has better public transit than LA and cleaner air.

Move out here if it's what you want to do, but be cautious of having unrealistic expectations. No city is perfect, every place has its flaws, (crime, pollution, bad weather, stupid people)...including here.

I personally think California is by far the best place to live in the United States. But yes, it's also the most expensive.

It depends on which city you go to - California is such a big state. Some parts are beautiful and some I would not recommend. One thing to note, though, is that housing in CA is expensive.
