I have been recently insulted by a man on here because He claims I have no right to defend my breed because according to him he (my dog) does not qualify as a Pitbull because I do not fight him nor does he come from Pit fighting parents. He feels the rest of us should shut up because we do not own real Pitbulls and therefore are not entitled to speak about the breed.

My question is this;
If a person has a Lab or pointer and does not retrieve or point with their dog then technically according to this guy your dog is not a real Lab or Pointer, do you agree?
That would also mean that for those of us who do not do what our dogs were originally bred for but rather have them as pets do not REALLY own what you thought you owned...
am I wrong?

I believe that dogs which are meant for a specific purpose (whether it be herding, retrieving, fighting) are best when they are in their element. However, since most of the pups from a litter of properly bred stock will not be aces at whatever their job is (not every lab pup will make a good retriever) I have no qualms with people owning these as just pets. I do however feel strongly that for the best interest of the breed that only the true workers out of each litter should be bred. If a house lab is bred with another house lab for whatever stupid reason (money, puppies are cute etc...) it is not in the best interest of the breed. It would take some major philosophy changes to make people aware of this, but that is why so many people have issues and built up aggression towards dogs they consider were bred from undeserving parents. The bloodlines may be great and all, but that does nothing for the future puppies if the job in which the dogs were bred for is not performed. So I agree with you that you do OWN a APBT/AmStaff. However, I do not think you should be breeding it.

I agree with what Dustin said, I just wanted to comment on the people who are throwing dogfighters under the bus. STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING YOU READ. Dogs are not supposed to be starved, dehydrated, or get the taste of blood like sensationalistic media keeps teaching inner city youths. Sadly, because of what papers write, people either believe it or worse, try those ieas out on their dogs. I have even seen a dog that had half of its front legs amputated by its 18 year old owner so it could have more leverage in a pitfight... that is just stupid. Real dogfighters do none of this so to put them all in the same boat is also stupid. Dogfighting is for finding gameness for breeding purposes ONLY. No dog is MADE to fight because that would prove pretty quick that it wasn't game if it backed away. Dogs are rarely killed and ahrdly ever even injured. If people are so against dogfighting, they need to stop eating 1 of a 100 billion chickens that are inhumanely slaughtered every year or that baby cow that is softened up for your veal. Don't believe what you read and stop being hypocrits.

"a Lab or pointer and does not retrieve or point with their dog then technically according to this guy your dog is not a real Lab or Pointer"

There are people that feel that way in many breeds. If the dog does not have the instinct to do what it is suppose to do it is missing an integral part of breed type. MANY people will not breed such a dog. Technically, it is still a Pointer/Lab etc but an inferior one.

Your reasoning seems sound to me. Your city animal control only goes by "Does it look like a pit bull?" Your insurance company considers it a pit bull - they sure don't ask if its ever been in a pit, or a fight for that matter. Just because they are the sweetest, most tolerant, loving dog in the world dosen't mean they can't be called a pit bull . Of course you have the right to defend the breed. I have never owned one but have known some quite well - I defend them every chance I get.

You dog does not qualify as an APBT because it is an Amstaff. Get your lies straight before you try to slam something you know nothing about. Your`re a stupid b@@@h that can`t handle the truth. Keep on whining, maybe you`ll convince the other morons into feeling sorry for you pathetic ***. You are putting a spin on what was really said and it is backfiring . The other answerers are too lazy to look up the question you posted and my answer to it. I was going to leave it alone but when you try to get personal, it brings out the gameness in me.

MJ & F-pit are RIGHT!!!

YOU are WRONG!

But you're sure NOT alone. Most doofs think Lab means"plays ball alot" & Beagle is a TOY breed & JRT are "wittle spotty apartment doggies" instead of the vermin KILLERS they are! On it goes.

I hunt/work my dogs. I KNOW what they can do. My 10 lb bitc-h has worked *20* lb COON! The others who have the breed are AMAZED & some are horrified! That means THEY are WRONG & ignorant & UN-WILLING to be ed-ja-mucated ***&*** don't have REAL dawgs.
If you have AmStaff, you do NOT have "pitbulls" & should NOT be blathering on about them to those who DO! *OR* spreading MIS-INFORMATION on to those that DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER!

You are totally right, that guy must have some kind of problem to think that dogs are only meant to do what some people use them for. What if a pit bull was used as a seeing-eye dog? Does that not make him a pit bull? Dogs do whatever they want and don't have to be classified by what they do. You have a pit bull if it was born one and looks like one, but it doesn't have to do what other bad owners who fight them do just to be a pit bull. You have every right to be furious, and some people on here seem to not have much common sense in helping people out with their questions by giving very useless responses to them. Your dog is lucky to have you to stand up for it, even on the internet.

No you are not wrong. I don't why you would get so upset or waste so much of your good energy over someone who knows diddly about the breed you own.
Pit bulls dogs are essentially rat terriers. The modern day pit bull was initially used in a pit (not with bulls) to kill rats. This was a sport that occurred in the 1800's after bull baiting was banned in England. Prior to rat baiting the tenacious attitude was bred into the dog for when they were used in slaughter houses on unruly bulls who got out of line. The dog was trained to latch onto a bulls leathery nose and hang on until the bull tired and could then be slaughtered.
It was only in the Americas was the breed used in baiting other dogs or as a status symbol for gangs.
Please know that most pit bull terriers are not cuddly pets. They can and will kill humans. Until responsible dog breeders start breeding for a more gentle disposition in the breed you are taking a chance that your dog will not "switch on" one day.
As for having "real" pit bull terriers, unless that person intends to toss his pits into an actual pit with about a dozen rats he does not own real pit bull terriers either. :)
Enjoy your dog, and keep him/her well trained at all times please.

does this clear things up?

The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are closely related breeds, sharing a common ancestry as recently as the early 1900s. The main physical difference between the breeds is that the American Staffordshire Terrier is not permitted to have red ("Dudley") nose leather, whereas American Pit Bull Terriers may have nose leather of any colour, including red, black and blue. The American Staffordshire Terrier is also often of larger bone structure, head size and weight than their American Pit Bull Terrier cousins.

No you are not wrong. This guy is talking out of his head. Just because you want this dog as your pet and I am very proud of you!! There is too many ppl out there that are fighting their dogs and I think it is a shame...If you have certain kinds of breeds your home owners policies say that you can`t have certain breeds of dogs and I think it was added to when ppl fight their dogs...I also know ppl that have good pitbull pets and they are good natured being around ppl.
