Shouldn't they end their call to be polite? I believe the service people should ignore them until they finish their call and take care of the customer that is paying attention. What do you think?

I work in a business with a drive-through window and it happens all the time. I think that people don't recognize the transaction as an interaction between people. They treat my window the way they would a remote ordering microphone at McDonalds or like an ATM.
When businesses stopped giving customers personal service and attention, the customers began to respond in kind. We have trained them well.

I agree. I work in customer service and deal with that everyday. I will have 4 people in line and theone in front will be making demands and then get on her cell phone while I am trying to help her. I wish I could send them to the end of the line and help the next person, but I can't. People are just self centered and rude. What's really fun is when they hit you with their cart because they aren't paying attention to where they are going in stores.

Mobile phones have an ignorant chip put in them that frys into people brains via their flat ears. The polite thing to do would be to excuse themselves, go outside and take the call and then go about their business. Just throw the burger on the counter, they're too dumb to notice.

I agree with you, but some times i can't get the person on the other end to SHUT up to tell them to hold on or i'll call them right back so i have leave the call on and not pay attention to the call... i do give my attention to the employee because i am a waitress and i won't wait on someone on the phone. i will wait till you hang up or tell the person to hold on.
One time i was working and this person would not get off their phone then had the audacity to flag me and tell me to come there. I told him, well if you'd get off the phone and give me some respect i will "wait" on you, until then i am ignoring you!
they either put the call on hold or hang up pretty quick....

Yes, they should end the call and take care of the business at hand.

In my shop I do ignore people yacking on cell phones. I had one gripe to be about service. I did say, "When your finished talking on the phone, I'll gladly serve you." They left and good BYE jerks.

I admit I am guilty of doing this sometimes, but I do try to make a conscious effort to hang up the phone. Well, unless I'm talking to my sister who is in Iraq or a long distance friend. I usually try to put them on hold while I order/pay though. To answer your question: yes it is rude.

Generally speaking, it is a little rude, but it might be unavoidable to some people. Some people have to be "in direct communication" due to the line of work they are in. When I was a cashier, it never really bothered me to wait on people on cell phones, unless of course it was a transaction where I really needed their attention.

I've never seen anyone walking on their cell phone as they approach service counters, but if you say it happens, then I have to believe you. But isn't it awfully hard on the phones?

that is bad but what is worst is when your at a business and the person that is helping you answers the phone they have people in the back to do that

Many people are inherently rude and self-centered. Not all--but way too many think the world revolves around them.
