My wife proposed to me after dating 5 weeks. We had our "spiritual commitment to each other" the next night with our friends and flowers and a big bottle of Ripple wine. (It was in the mid '60s) Had a church wedding 5 weeks later. Just celebrated our 40th anniv of our "commitment."

Five years and it doesn't mean anything. Yes we are still married and it has been 3 yrs but if you are asking when is the right amount of time before you get married this is none. No one knows what the future holds no matter if you are dating 10 yrs or 1 month. No marriage is guaranteed for life, but if people would spend as much time on saving their marriage as they do on planning their wedding then there would be alot more marriages saved.

An entire year, but it was difficult to wait so long, especially because parent opposed and we just wanted to get married.

Experts say make sure to be engaged for at least 6 months. That is the recommended time frame, before ting the knot. You want to make sure, nothing weird or unknown is going to come up, it can still come up, but at least you gave yourself half a year to evaluate the person more.

We dated for a little more than 3 years before we got married, but we knew pretty soon after we met that we would eventually get married. I proposed on her birthday in a park :-)
