That book confuses people, too many contradictions, too many unbelievable stories ( seriously, some people turned to salt because they looked at something????), too much violence for something that's supposebly preaching peace and tolerance.....
And it's one other reason for people to be fanatical!
So I do want to believe in God, I mean something out there anyway, but is it worth anything if I don't believe most of what's in the Bible?

I think so. The bible is a book that should still be being written. It is a book which was edited by men in a time and place when women were not of importance. The women in the Bible seem to me to be only queens, moms and people of questionable character... or at least that is how they are presented.

People have to accept that the new testament is not the only part of the bible. Bible is actually translated to "book of stories" in hebrew. So it is basically self explanitory. It is a book of stories. And what most people don't aknowledge is jesus is not the GOD that did all that is written in the old testament. That is where your faith comes in and you distinguish what is to what is not. To a relevance sakes for "YOU". Christians have a faith that will not accept there is no GOD but Jesus. But they are hypocrites because they put so much emphasis on jesus and forget about the god they call the father. So much emphasis on the created and not enogh on the creater. But with every faith(including christianity) that is the question at hand. Even the prophets in the bible had thier faiths tested. Just because they were prophets does not at all mean they did not all have thier faiths tested and were all far from perfect. But that is where THE GOD comes in. To perfect thier imperfections. To be a friend when there is none to call your own.

I will get thumbs down for this statement alone, but I am islamic. But I don't think like other muslims of this earth. They would either like what I have to say or call me extremely blashemous. And in both cases, they would be correct. I don't believe there is a GOD. That is the difference. I "know" there is a GOD and belief can sometimes blind you compared to acceptance. Belief is like fantasy land, but can hardly look at it through a purely physical sense. Fromj simply looking at an ant and aknowledging it exists and I did not create it. Even if you have or will have an offspring. One can have sex and claim they created a life. WRONG. What they did was simply had sex and enjoyed it. GOD did the rest. I mean I don't have the ability to make a human life but I can have sex and excrete semen into a woman's vagina. And she can lay there and enjoy it, but she can not make the child. A woman's womb is just a place for the child to take form. To the outcome of me, you, and mankind on a whole. But no mother can make a child. She can take the pain and joy from the experience as a gift if they choose to think like that. But they can not make a child nor can choose if it shall be a male, female, or autistic. LIFE!

Yes, you can belive in God without the Bible. It 's called being a Diocist. I know a lot of people who are this way. And I totally agree with you about the preaching in the Bible. That book is so edited from the time of the Ancients. We don't even know what Jesus really said or did because of this. So go ahead belive God in your own way. After all it's the only way to truly give religion meaning. I would also suggest studing other relgions to help you get a better understand of God.

Of course you can, what about all the other religions out there that have their own "bibles" Religion is just a way to control the masses, and the way some people interpret their religions (anyone of them) would make God very sad.
God is all about Love, Peace, non Judgement and Forgiveness, if you live by that you are living in God's image. And belief in the universal law of what comes around goes around, it is very true, God is not the one setting out to punish the bad, but there is no other way, when you eat you ****, car gets gas, drives, exhaust comes out. For every action there is an equal reaction, it is how it is. So be kind and kindness will come you way. Hurt people and you will get hurt, if not now then in another life, it is Karma,. it has to happen, no blame just a universal law

Don't worry about all the things that confuse you at first. As you get to know God, He will help you to understand all that He wants you to know. The Holy Spirit will lead you to the answers that you need to know. Don't listen to people who have never read the book. They are poor judges of what it is all about. Some are judging it by what they have heard other critics say rather than reading it for themselves. There are lots of folks out here who would love to help you understand the parts that are confusing. There are lots of kooks too. So be careful. There will always be fanatics. There will also be those who know the truth. If you want a good book to help you understand Christianity and Jesus Chris;t, I recommend "More than a Carpenter" by Josh McDowell

I am an atheist with respect to The Bible. I disbelieve *that* God. The God of The Bible to me is clearly just as mythical as Zeus or Thor.

But when I set aside The Bible, I have to admit I am agnostic. I think there may be a supreme intelligence. That supreme intelligence may have created this universe, or it may have evolved as part of the expansion and growth of this universe.

I think that if is no problem if you want to have faith in the existence of a supreme intelligence. Just don't let that faith blind you to what can be learned about reality by reason and observation.

Yes it is and you don't need to be a Bible-bot. But try sticking with the New Testament for right now, if the Old Testament bothers you.

However, bear in mind that faith does not always involve the liberal perception of "peace and tolerance," or the "give peace a chance" mentality.

First off, It is not given on to everyone to understand everything in the Bible. Parts of scripture has to be revealed to you. Also, While everything in the Bible is "truly Stated" It was written as it happened or was said. Not everything in the Bible is a "Statement of Truth." And example of a false statement is in Job 1:21 "The Lord gave, and the Lord taken away." That was not true. in Job 1:12 "Behold all he has is in thy power" we see Satan had the power to take it away. God did not take it away.
The Bible has many aspects, One of which is a History book.

What about authenticity and anything relevant, concrete, and factual? That is the standard we seek and one that fits the Bible, and without understanding the Bible, one cannot understand the meaning and purpose of life, the existence of God as you pose, and anything related to our responsibility before such a Triune God. Please be open-minded and take in everything God has for you which is written down therein. It's for your good.
