I want something nice but not freakishly big. What's a good size?

I used to work in a jewelry store and most engagement rings that we sold were in the half carat to full carat range. My ring is a full carat but I inheireted it from my Aunt. A good rule is to not go into debt for the engagement ring. The diamond purchased now can be used as a side diamond for a three diamond ring later. My other advice is buy a diamond that is sparkly and pretty. That sounds obvious but some folks get so wrapped up in what it says on the certificate they don't notice the way the stone looks. Shop around, not just at the mall stores because they have huge markups - which is why they can afford to offer such discounts.

A lot of people get 1 carat diamond rings, but an engagement ring is supposed to be a very personal gift, get whatever makes you happiest. If others think its too big or too small, thats their problem. Its about your happiness, and commitment to one another.

carats start small it all depends what you want
a solitaire 1/4 to 1/2 is nice if your young and very nice a whole carat but the price increases with the size of the stone(carat).

1/4 carat to 1/3 is a nice size. Of course 1/2 is better. I personally wouldn't want one bigger, only because it is solitary and sticks up high. I would be afraid of wearing it every day

my fiance' bought me a 5/8 carat princess cut diamond, which is a little bigger than a 1/2 carat, i was with him when he picked it out. its whatever you prefer and he can afford, i would have taken a ring from the quarter machine but this one is very gorgeous and i love it and him very much.

Mine is 1.12 carats. The center is .97 and there are 2 tapered baguettes totaling .15.

.7-.75 is about average among most of my friends.

Is money a factor? I think that women really do enjoy "larger" diamonds, but I also think that quality can be sacrificed when you are buying a larger diamond, especially if money is something that you consider when you're buying one. Usually the man decides what is within his budget first and then go on looking based on what you can afford.

But really I think that it's not the ring that she's marrying.... it's you.

My fiance just gave me mine in July and it's 1.21ct total weight but the center stone is .75ct round, brilliant cut and it's gorgeous! It's not to big to look silly but it's big enough to see without a magnifying glass too.

Good luck! I'm sure whatever you choose will be beautiful, and it's really about the commitment, not the size of the diamond!
