Jesus told His disciples who were marveling at the temple in Jerusalem that it would all be destroyed--a lesson the rest of us should learn today. I think we should go back to the model from the book of Acts--believers meeting in each others' homes. Who needs a "church building"?
The first link below is an excellent article on the huge problem biblically when it comes to church debt. I hope it gets people thinking.

Yes, I agree with you. How many hungry people in this world would have that fed? I am a Christian and I firmly believe in God and Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Sometimes Christians get to thinking they will build a great object to honor God. What they are doing is exactly what the Israelites did when Moses left and went to the burning bush on the mountain. When he came down, he found them worshiping a golden cow they had built. Same thing. they would have been so very better off splitting up the congregation into much smaller groups and building much smaller churches for fellowship and worship. It's all about God, not some wonderful creation of mankind such as huge churches with stained glass windows and things.

Do they need a building that big? Consider how many homeless would've been sheltered, fed, given counseling. How many people could they have helped taking that $$ and putting it towards a free clinic, or a food bank, or giving it to or helping Habitat for Humanity?
This is where I think Evangelical Christianity has gone horribly wrong. What they're not using to build huge megachruches (which they really don't need), they are ignoring the people who really need help. Jesus didn't preach from some nice huge building, he didn't need it. All the money he had went to helping others! People have forgotten that part of being a christian is doing Jesus' work! Get out there and do good works, help your fellow man when he needs it!

i totally agree!!! That money could be used for the missions that Christ wants his church to help out with. Here in this country and abroad. There is nothing wrong with a large facility that can house the people who worship there, but that sounds like the temples that Christ fought against when he was here on earth. God and the holy trinity are not confined to a building. My family is descended from Amish and Mennonite, some still are. The Amish and some plainer sects of Mennonite hold their churches in different homes of the community. I believe that unfortunately the "organized" part of religion tends to often times get in the way of the true message they are supposed to be sending to the community and the congregation. I just pray that I'm wrong and that maybe that building is also housing a school, or maybe other services to help in the community. I DO NOT believe that Christian churches are the only religion to build these kind of buildings.

I think it is a bit excessive, I am not a big fan of Churches that are half church, half amusement park (Six Flags over Jesus as we used to call them). That being said, I would need to see what they did with that money. Did they start a soup kitchen, a shelter, a training program for unemployed or homeless in their area? Alternatively, did they just try to build a modern tower of babel? Regardless of what I think about the cost, I hope they use their facilities to do some good in their community (At least $48,000,000 worth!)

WHO can help thousands and thousands of people without building the church big enough. This is money well used for the Kingdom purposes. You cannot see it necessary if you do not think that you chuch should have more seats for people who are not members yet.
It is expensive to build these days. No one can just donate the premises for the church big like that. What is really bugging you? Go to serve in a small church if you do not like to open the door for new people. Churches are connecting people to a life saving relationship with God. Money well spent.

No. The tabernacle and later the temple were built with the best, most precious materials available. If people love God, it is not wrong to give him all you have.
If the leaders of this church do no relief for the poor, or if the leaders line their own pockets, then Jesus would treat them like the moneychangers in the temple.

I think Jesus would have better things to do with 48 mill. One more reason to avoid organized religion.

Its not unusual for the people of God to build expensive places of worship. In fact, many different faiths do that. Temples, Mosques, Churches. What's your point??? Or are you just picking on one faith? I don't think it bothers the Son of God. Solomon's Temple was fashioned after the heavenly Temple.
