Are you speaking of the religions or the cultures

Christianity says that women are subservient to men

Islam says that women and men are equal and women have special status. We are to win all arguments and get everything we want. Any money that the man makes the woman also has. But any money the woman gets can not be touched by any man.

Most religions, when they were created/came into being/whatever, started in a time when danger was far more real then now and life was harder. Men were the ones who provided and hunted while the woman stayed home. It is not about abuse or oppression, but what was common place back then for the safety of all. Looking at it from a 21st century view, we see it as barbaric, but they did not. It just takes a while for anything that has been in place for 2000 years or longer to change the way they have been thinking.

Because most are patriarchal in origin and presupposes the "superiority" of men and the right of men to control beliefs. At one point in time the earth and the sacred feminine were celebrated Then a paradigm shift which saw men killing one another over land and riches also saw the enslavement of women and the establishment of religions where men were central and women were subjugated.

Define "abuse" and "oppress" and explain your position rather than ask a stupid, feminist, and biased question.

As for the "fact" that women are superior to men: Who is the greatest scientist of all time? The greatest right now? who is the greatest leader of all time?
Easy. Three guys: Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Alexander the Great. 'Nuff said.

I think the people who do abuse and oppress women in the name of religion just use that as an excuse. They interpet the bible to fit their own wants. The bible does say women should be obdient to their husbands but there is a line and a lot of people miss that fact that women are important in religion.

actually if carefully read all the religions and Holy Books, u will see that a woman is held in high esteem. but since all countries and continents on earth are in the hands of ALPHA MALES since the beginning of time, we are always pushed down. be it Eve, Mary Magdalene, Joan of Arc, Boudica, Indhra Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, u and me and many women like us.

the societies and cultures were mere puppets in the hands of men since the beginning of time. and WOMEN ABUSE has become a GLOBAL PHENOMENON , unrestricting itself to cultures, religion, socities and continents. so i feel that all women in the world should make their stand.

they have diverted us a lot by speaking about Liberalism and Freedom and that is being taking in a path of Beauty and Fashion. we women should realise that we are more than just a pretty face and should tear it down. afterall, how many women today do u find as -- Presidents of countries or as Scientists and Researchers.

we have many Paris Hiltons but how many Oprahs do we have.? we have many aspiring Aishwarya Rai but how many Kiran Bedis could we find? we have many Yasmin Ghauris but how many Sania Mirza can we spot.? we need more Madam Curie, we need many more Lakhshmi Bai, and we need many more Sania Mirza and Benazir Butto in this world today.

well i would have to say that it is because to destroy Pagan coltures they had to bring down the rights of the women.

women are revered in Pagan coltures as the only ones that have the ability to create life. the man is needed, but the woman is the one that has the body to make it work.

most pagan coltures see life as sacred, and because of this hold anoyone that can create life in very high regard.

because the monothestic religions require compleat control over all of their followers they could not have women feeling like they were able to ask questions and confront the male leadership.

so they demonised the very thought of women being equal or being revered as life givvers and stripped them of their rights.

I'm not sure which religions you had in mind when you asked this question, but I can't think of any. It's been over zealous men thinking they are acting on the behalf of their god that have chosen to oppress. But if you look closely at the bible, you will find a god who loves and promotes women.

Most religions repress women because they were written by patriarchal men.
