I'm truly sorry for your loss.
I had a similar experience which started me on the path toward atheism. Today, I am a strong atheist because of my studies.
Here are some links to help you figure it out for yourself, you may find that you become stronger in your faith or you may abandon it
Did Jesus exist:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus
http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/theism/christianity/historicity.html
Who put the bible together:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/biblical_canon
Other early christian beliefs (those that lost the battle for orthodoxy)
- Marcionites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/marcionism
- Ebionites: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ebionites
- Gnostics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/gnosticism
There are many other links (which others will post) that question the existence of god/jesus
I'm sure that a thesis will have links to counter mine, look at everything and decide for yourself
You should also understand, why early man started believing in a god or gods. They did not have explanations for the natural world.
Good luck
Rick

i always knew santa claus was a fake. at first the elf thing, then the whole idea of an obese smoker being able to bounce all over the world in even a long night... no way. that guy would have won the olympics. and how the heck did this freak know who i am?
christmas has nothing to do with Christianity. i'm christian... i just don't like christmas.
and when you pray, do you really believe that it's going to come true? i have friends who were in a pretty bad car accident. the only thing is, the car and the people in it were perfectly fine. it's a true story... they got out, and the mom was like "oh no the car" until she actually saw it. then she was like "WHOA how did that not happen?"
have you heard this song by ABBA?
I have a dream,
A song to sing
To help me cope
With anything.
If you see the wonder
Of a fairy tale,
You can take the future
Even if you fail.
I believe in angels:
Something good in
Everything I see.
I believe in angels
When I know the time
Is right for me.
I'll cross the stream...
I have a dream.
I have a dream,
A fantasy
To help me through
Reality.
And my destination
Makes it worth the while.
Pushing through the darkness
Still another mile.
I believe in angels:
Something good in
Everything I see.
I believe in angels
When I know the time
Is right for me.
I'll cross the stream...
I have a dream.

I feel for you. Losing loved ones is difficult, to say the least.
I'm sure "believers" will give you many replies about god's love and god's plan, and "better places" and they will say they will pray for you... But that's all just bull$h1t.
There is no god. Never was. Never will be. Praying didn't help because it can't. Praying can only make someone FEEL better. (And for those who disagree... for those who say god hears our prayers and answers them but it may not be the answer we want, they why pray in the first place?)
When a former Believer finally realized the truth about god it is natural to feel alone and betrayed (at first). But, given time, and perhaps with the aid of literature, this same person will find a freedom of the mind not formerly appreciated because of the binds of religion.
Yes, it IS sort of like learning Santa Clause is make believe. In fact that is EXACTLY what it is like. Human beings are the only mammals that make up fictional explanations for that which we do not understand. It is as if the mind cannot comprehend an unanswerable question. As when electricity arks, the electrical impulses within our brain seeks out connection.... even if it has to jump (or ark) to a conclusion whether it makes sense or not.
Some who regect the god concept never look back. Others waffle. But one thing is for sure: most people can never go back once the seed of doubt is planted. There is just too much that doesn't make sense about believing in god. Any god.
Welcome to my world!
Here's some web sites to get you started.
Again, my sincere sympathy for your losses.

As a person who was raised in a Christian home and then realized I do not believe in a deity, I have to say that I'm not sure you have actually stopped believing in YHWH. I always felt doubt that there was verifiable truth to religion--it always felt like fairy tales to me. However, it seems as though you were a true believer, and that your faith gave you comfort during the passing of your grandmother.
You should know that believing in something is often difficult--you will come across obstacles. Prayer isn't like wishing on a star; you don't always get what you ask for. Some people use it as a way of connecting with the deity they believe in, and others use it as a method of reflection and introspection. It can be a good and useful thing.
I am pretty much an atheist, but I recognise the comfort and strength that religion can often give to people, as it seems to have done for you. If you still believe but are merely angry with YHWH, then you should talk to other people--preferably your own age--who believe similarly to you. That will also help you make friends. Try a youth group or an association like Christian Athletes.
If you truly no longer believe, know that living a good life is its own reward--this life is important enough to deserve to be lived well. You can make friends and find comfort by doing things like volunteering--perhaps with the elderly, as the loss of your grandmother was obviously painful for you. Good luck.

I went to Sunday school and church at my Mom's insistence until I refused at 11. Nothing about it ever appealed to me, and I have always put my faith in my family and friends and the people I see going out and making a difference (yes, I know that phrase is a bit trite, but it really is the best way to say it) for positive change. I never have believed and know that going through the motions is not belief, so I can't give you the perspective of an EX-christian.
Were I you, I would look at what out there IS real for you and is worthy of your faith. Perhaps a cause to which your efforts would be a real contribution. Perhaps a career or volunteer work that would give you a sense of fulfillment, such as teaching, or peace corps, or such.
Think for yourself and find what you truly want from and want to give to life.

i know what you mean, i grew up in the bible belt, so many religious people, i would just try to make friends, at lunch time just go sit with some people who look interesting, it doesnt have to be the popular jocks or the really religious people or the goths just choose a group of people who look interesting or who you know and just sit down if it doesnt work out try somewhere else the next day. If you argue with people about the existence of god (which might be fun for alot of us atheists) then people will probably know that you just like to stir stuff up and then they wont want to be your friends. If your atheist if you want to tell people just tell your friends or people that are close to you after they like you for you, then they wont really care, but if you just say oh im an atheist or a different religion (like really different than the ones in the majority of your town/school) then people will just not like you and judge you, they wont want diverse because people hate anything that is different than them, but if the world had no diversity we would all be mindless zombies so diversity kicks a ss!!! hope you can find friends and everything gets better.

All I can suggest is do a lot of reading, different faiths and all. Read the Bible, The Koran, THE BHAGAVAD GITA (Hindu Holy Text), all religions and different beliefs (but similar at the same time).
I can't answer your questions. I was a "Born again Christian" and became disillusioned with it. I didn't agree with the rampant sexism in the Bible, and the condemnation of everything I felt was natrual. I started looking into Paganism and I never left.

The trinity is an apostate theory held onto by making use of the churches yet no longer interior the bible. and that i'm sorry to assert that islam is a faux faith by way of fact God already had the holy scriptures comprehensive six hundred years formerly the Koran. God did no longer could have the scriptures rewritten after all his applications have been already accomplished. God's puposes can not be thwarted and there is no point out in God's endless know-how and foresight that He necessary the scriptures rewritten. something this important would of been backed up solidly such by way of fact the arriving of Jesus grew to become into propesied many circumstances interior the hebrew scriptures even his line of geneology. there is no Mohammed or evidence to his declare any the place interior the scriptures. The lifeless Sea Scrolls supercede oldest primary texts of the hebrew bible to while Jesus grew to become into on the earth and not exhibit something that could justify the Koran being the mind-blowing Holy e book.. the themes with christianity and all that is denominations are actually not by way of scriptures yet to the traditions and political aims of the churches that misguide and misdirect people. The scriptures of the books and letters that make the Holy Bible are remarkably precise which what you will anticipate by way of fact the texts have been inspired and guarded by making use of God. God would not could shop rewritting the e book else it would defeat mankinds have confidence interior the scriptures in the event that they have been corruptable. The lifeless Sea Scrolls enable us to have lots have confidence interior the bible and faith that it nonetheless maintains to be precise. The scripture contemporary in 2 Timothy provides weight to the accuracy and validity to the holy scriptures it incredibly is used. 2 Timothy 3:sixteen-17 All Scripture is inspired of God and effective for coaching, for reproving, for placing issues straight away, for disciplining in righteousness, that the guy of God would be completely sensible, thoroughly geared up for each sturdy paintings. it incredibly is a ambitious assertion of religion by making use of the disciple Timothy that mankind could have absolute have confidence in.

You said, "i was just living a good life for nothing"
What do you mean by a "good life"?
Christians will teach you all kinds of stupid rules, and call that morality. But real morality is important because it benefits other people (and animals, for that matter). A silly rule like "no sex before marriage" is indeed a rule not worth following, but making compassionate decisions for others is not "for nothing". It truly makes the world a better place.

Just a lot of stuff in my life happened that I prayed about and nothing ever happened. So I just got to a point where I think if there is a god, he either doesn't care, or enjoys suffering. And it's almost more comforting to think there is no god than an uncaring, sadistic god.
