you want a sweet smell, also the area where the stem was
needs to give in as you push on it. not all the way just be sort of tender. If it won't give any don't buy it to eat today.
The softer this area and the sweeter the smell the riper the melon.

If it smells sweat, and the stem has a clean *round* break. Admittedly, sometimes I have to guess though. Look for bruises too.

if they smell it, then it's good. If they can't smell it then it isn't ripe yet.

You really can't tell by smelling it....squeeze it....if it's very soft it probably is too ripe..........
