In a question on Catholicism I read the answer of a Christian who exclaimed that Mary was not the mother of G-d. This has confused me, for if she is not the mother of G-d in Christianity, then does this mean that the Christian messiah is not G-d?

The answer you read was WRONG.

Anyone who claims that Mary is not the Mother of G-d (I want to respect your faith in the naming of our Lord) is denying the divinity of Jesus, and cannot call themselves Christians.

Christians believe that Jesus is the only begotten Son of G-d. He is at once completely divine and completely human, and the two cannot be untwined. The woman who bore Him in her body and gave Him birth was Mary. She could not give birth to only the human part of Jesus- because that would be denying the Christian tenet that Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit- He was G-d and Man from the first instant of His life within Mary's womb.

This is a point of confusion between Catholic Christians and Protestant Christians.

The title "God-Bearer" was given to Mary (the Blessed) many centuries ago by the Roman Catholic Church. It was in response to much debate at the time about Jesus' divinity. Some people said that the moment Jesus was concieved within Mary, He was God incarnate. Others said the "God-ness" entered Jesus sometime after birth, perhaps during his childhood or the 40 day fast he went through, etc. In settlement of this question, the Pope (can't remember which one, sorry) declared that Jesus was always divine, even before His physical conception. When Jesus was a man, He was also God. When Jesus was a teenager, He was also God. When Jesus was a child, He was also God. When Jesus was an infant, and even an unborn child, He was also God.

This made the Virgin Mary the "God bearer" by default, for she carried God within her womb. It isn't the container that is something special here: it is the contents. Catholics are not saying that Mary was a goddess bearing another god. They are simply stating the eternal nature of the Child she bore.

the answer of "a' Christian is not exactly the dominant doctrinal position of Christianity. It appears that you have overlooked this fact in you haste to prosecute a case against your nonacce[ptance of what Christians and Messianic Jews recognize as the waited Messiah, Jesus Christ. Although not a Biblical scholar for your comfort I"ll mention that if anything Jesus teachings command Jews to continue to practice the Law but notably to deal with sin by repentance rather than an annual sacrificing of animals. There are have been many inept and I dare say false Christians who may have offended you and likely said falsehoods and the like. Please do not hold contempt against Christians because of this. Lastly are you relay a Rabbi, can you prove it.

This is basically what came first the chicken or the egg.

But The Virgin Mary is the mother of Jesus- who is the son of God. In the bible God created everything in 7 days. Then god chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus, the son of god who lived and died in order for everyone's sins to be washed away and for all christians to be welcomed in the Kingdom of heaven.

She is the mother of God because she gave birth to Jesus. The Virgin Mary responded to the call from God to bring forth a savior. Mary is an example for all of us to not only seek the will of God but to DO IT in humble obidience. BTW Catholics do not worship Mary. She is respected for her Obidience and virtue and Catholics seek her intercession the same they would ask friends or family to pray for them. And frankly it's pretty messed up that people have to make fun of her when all she did was good. I believe the Virgin Mary is the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church.

There were several Mary's listed in the New Testament. In Luke chapter 1, it says that the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee called Nazareth. There he appeared to a virgin who was engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David. The virgin's name was Mary. This is the Mary who was the mother of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the son of God, but He is also God. That is why the Jewish religious leaders and the Romans wanted to kill him.

The Christian that responded seems to have based their answer on looking at the name God (which brings many people to think of God, The Father).

Hope this brings clarity.

Mary is the PHYSICAL birth mother of God, The Son (when He was in the FLESH).

Nothing/Noone existed before God, The Father, therefore He has no mother.

Blessings!

Good question...Theotokos = Mother of God or Birth-Giver of God. This explanation might help clarify things for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theotokos

Christians believe that God has three personalities (yet God is the one and only God): the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not three gods. Christianity is monotheistic. Reason this confuses many non-Christians is that the Trinity entails the possibility that a being can be multi-dimensional in its personality.

Mary is most definitely the Mother of God. It's just that some religions do not believe that Jesus is God but, just the Son of God. I guess they forgot to read the gospel of John. They are actually more cults than religions. When you think about it, the Catholic religion is the only one who's founder you will not find in a grave. And Catholics do not worship Mary. They love her as she is their Mother. Didn't God say "Honor thy Father and thy Mother"

Mary is the birth mother of God according to Christianity. God impregnated her, and she gave birth to Jesus. According to Catholicism, that makes her worthy of extra attention and in some cultures, worship.
