no the porterhouse comes from the larger side of the T Bone. and the new york strip is like a fatty Ribeye steak. Two totally different cuts of meat.

A porterhouse consists of two steaks (a New York strip and a filet mignon) connected by bone. As the porterhouse turns into T-bone the strip stays the same, but the filet fades.

A NY steak is similar to a porterhouse except the NY cut has a very small portion of the fillet in it, while the porterhouse has a large portion of the fillet. Contrary to the above answer the NY and porterhouse both have a bone in it.
Both are very good but, I prefer the porterhouse because of the larger portion of the fillet

A New York strip can be either by it self or half of a porterhouse. A porterhouse consists of a New York strip and a filet mignon divided by a bone, AKA porterhouse T-bone.

When I was a kid my dad (from Wyoming) and my mom (from New York) said that what was called a NY steak in CA was called a porterhouse in NY and a porterhouse in CA was called a sirloin in NY. Which is totaly confusing because there is a sirloin in CA as well - or it might have been top sirloin. Confused? I am!

I think the new york is part of a porterhouse, but the new york has no bone, and the porterhouse has a bone.
