I heard a Muslim woman who had moved to the states talk about the difference between the two cultures. She felt uncomfortable here. She felt that women here had to compete with men all the time. She claimed to feel much more comfortable in her own country because women there had a definite role, wife and mother. They were protected and cared for. They were not expected to go out in the workplace and compete with the opposite sex.
I'm not judging either culture. So much has to do with how you were raised. I'm just pointing out that there is another point of view and that Muslim women do not necessarily feel constrained by their own culture.

When born into a belief system you usually except what your parents teach you and try to find a way to belong. I had a proposal of marriage from an Arab. He wanted me to be his third wife and offered to have his two other wives explain the advantages of such an arrangement. They were all very nice, but with my background there was no way that was going to happen!

I guess it would be good for the ugly, stupid ones, since her father would pick her husband generally from among her immediate relatives, or from among his good friends, and she would almost be guaranteed to have children to raise, even if they belonged to another of his wives. I know a woman who was made to marry her cousin. Their mothers are sisters, and their fathers are twin brothers. kind of like marrying her brother.
