I don't see the distinction between legal and illegal there.

FDR was a career politician. Whether it was his parents or grandparents were technically boat immigrants. Who more than likely, came into the mainland as homesteaders.
Imagine, how many lives may have been destroyed or wiped-out for the 'in the name of financial progress'.
At the turn of the 20th century, newborn immigrants rights of passage began at Ellis Island. If, new arrivals were labeled 'undesirables', they would be returned back to there countries.
There are too many people entering this country and we do not know what type of health problems they may have (physical, psychological, etc.).
NOTE>This is a controversial question, worth discussing.

Things change..Times change. What was isn't necessarily still good. I used to drive a car without a catalytic converter...I wouldn't think about it now. We use to use DDT, spank kids in school, make girls wear dresses and not allow blacks to vote. Should we bring back all those good ideas?
There was a time when immigrants came here and WANTED to be American..not make Americans learn their languages and customs. Too many immigrants now are illegal and are overpowering our court and health care systems. It's time to take back America and put an end to uncontrolled immigration, especially the illegal kind.
I also want my kids and grand kids to have the same things that I had. Fresh air, plenty of food and safe schools...maybe even a chance to go to a clean lake for summer vacation. This is definitely in jeopardy by the overpopulating of this country.
It's time to wake up and think ahead....not behind!! When I see a statement like that it makes me think that it's an excuse for common sense. If you really want to study history, study the Roman empire and see what really brought it down.

Bet Franklin didn't foresee the influx of illegals trying to take over America. Wonder what he would have done to clean up this mess...
How about
"Walk softly and carry a big stick"

I think he wasn't referring to illegals that is to say people here in this country breaking the law thus making them criminals who we support with our taxes while our children get shorted in the class rooms and our emergency rooms flooded. How about the illegal person who is driving a vehicle without insurance and crashes into an Am.citizen who is now stuck with hospital and vehicle bills while they run back to their country to avoid prosecution etc...Immigrants who apply to stay in the country is one thing ...those who sneak their way in and try to justify it is another.

True.
But how many of us are descended from ILLEGAL immigrants?
When most of them came over here, there were no laws of immigration - so how can one violate a law that was not there to violate?
There are laws now. Violating those laws are not acceptable. Why should we reward criminals? DEPORT.

Yes, but most of us are decendants of LEGAL immigrants. The debate isn't over immigration or no immigration. It is over what to do about the ILLEGAL immigration.

yes it is important to remember that we descended from legal immigrants, and that we were able to blend into society.
So we should expect the same from immigrants of today and hold them to the same standard our families did.
