i would say probably around the same time they can leave the mother and go to a new home. 8 weeks...you want to start them young if not then you are not going to be able do it when they get older.

If it is an emergency, they can be washed as soon as their eyes start to open (I have had to do things like wash tar out of abused kittens' fur, or wash filthy kittens that came into the shelter after being dropped in mud, or clean infections and abcesses). For these sitauations, you want to use warm water, the gentlest topical that will serve the purpose, and dry them completely afterwards. Do not use any powerful flea shampoos on them, or anything like that. If there is a flea problem, use a flea comb and a dish of water with pyrethrin dip in it to place the fleas into after combing them out.

If just a regualr bath, you can get them used to being handled for washing when they are about 5 weeks old. Lavendar scented wipes are really nice for this (smells good, is non-irritating, and repels fleas). At about 12 weeks, their immune systems start to kick in, and baths are safer.

Whether you plan on bathing your cats regularly or not (most adult indoor cats don't need it), it's still a good idea to get them USED to baths at a young age....because you really never know....you may end up with something on the cat, a nasty flea problem, etc. If they're already used to being washed, you won't have any problems.

Typically you're not suppose to wash cats unless they are kittens and get food all over themselves. Cats hate water and they wash themselves with their tounges. They do it so well that they just don't need baths. I learned this the hard way. You'll actually hurt a cats pride and feelings if you put them in a washtub. You'll put them into a depression. Don't do it unless necessary.

A cat should never have a bath especially kittens... Bathing a cat can dries out the cat's skin, which can lead to skin diseases (dandruff) coz there's some kindda body oil in the cat's fur or body, that's what my vet told me... Just give it a bath maybe once a month or only when it is needed (if your cat stinks or gets too dirty)...

Cats can clean themselves with their tounge (by licking its body & using their paws). Maybe you can help by brushing your cat or just give it a sponge bath/ using a damp cloth.

If you still wanna give your kitten its 1st bath, wait till it is older enough (12 weeks & above)... Please use warm water or your kitten might be freezing to death... & please make it fast (just a quick bath).. & then you have to quickly use a dry towel/ hair dryer to dry its fur...

My youngest sister once killed a kitten... She was 4 years old back then... & she gave a kitten (which belongs to my grandma) a cold bath... We (my mom, my grandma & I) only found out about it when my cousin told us that he found a kitten who was soaking wet laying dead next to the water hose on the lawn... Poor kitten... Until today I kept teasing my sister for what she did to that poor little kitten everytime she wants to give our cat (Shiro) a bath... Just wanna share you my story...

You should not be bathing a kitten or cat, unless they've gotten into something really messy and they need a washup.

Don't. They don't need it unless they have stuff in their fur, and too much bathing can give them skin problems. If they have fleas, talk to your vet about Revolution, which protects against nearly everything that bites them, including heartworm.

Anytime. But treat it like a babies first bath. Very mild soap and shallow warm water that you drizzle over them.
