All of the serious answers here are correct.
Use "saran" (plastic) wrap for anything you want to keep the air out of (keep fresh) - it provides a tighter seal for storage.
When using aluminum foil (for oven use), make sure you place it 'shiny'-side down - this reflects the heat back into the food as it's cooking.
If you want to freeze something, wrap with plastic wrap first, then with the foil, to keep air out and a better seal.

As everyone who's answered has already told you, Saran Wrap is clear plastic. It's used to wrap left-overs and sandwiches in...although it's not totally air-tight, it comes close to it.
Aluminum foil is used to cover things while you're baking or roasting them (like a turkey breast or lasagna) or it can be used on the bottom of a cookie sheet or oven rack to catch spills. It helps to radiate heat.
You can also use aluminum foil to wrap things in for refrigeration. It just doesn't create the seal that Saran Wrap does.

Saran Wrap is the hateful plastic which sticks to everything but the dish you put it on ! If you don't have any, don't bother buying it!
Get the Glad press and seal wrap, its much easier to handle.
Use plastic wrap for the fridge and microwave. Use foil for baking in the oven, wrapping foods on the grill, as a liner for the grill.

Some aluminum foils can give certain foods a different taste (my experience) Saran wrap tends to hold better to glassware, as foil is good in freezer type situations. In my past experience, you should buy the name brand stuff in both Saran wrap and Reynolds foil. My "dollar store" tryouts were disasters.

The asker spelled aluminum like the British pronounce that word. Otherwise, for cost-consciousness, wrap breads and cakes in aluminum foil, and saran or plastic wrap most everything else.

Aluminum foil is made out of aluminum and Saran wrap in plastic. You can't use Saran wrap in the oven and you can't use aluminum foil in the microwave oven

Saram wrap is the clear one, used to cover vegetables and things that go into the fridge, it is also used for things like putting soup in the microwave so it doesnt explode all over the place. Foil is the aluminnum (like silver color ) one, that one is used to cover foods that go in the oven when for example you're cooking a lasagna in the oven to cover it up and keep the flavor inside, or to keep things like garlic bread warm after it comes out of the oven. I hope this clear up your question. Don t put foil in the microvawe!

Seran wrap is safer to store food with because i read a study once that showed aluminum foil wrapped items built up bacteria faster. but aluminum foil is better to put in the oven or to roll up and make a pipe with.
