It depends on him and his training. Just don't expect alot. If you don't hear from him, don't freak. They get on average 1 hour allotted to personal time. That doesn't mean they use it to write though. He'll also have other family and friends to keep in contact with too, I'm sure. They work them hard. Training isn't easy. He'll be more tired than you can imagine. Just be patient and don't jump to conclusions if you don't hear from him alot.
P.S. Write him often, even if you don't hear from him. Always be positive and keep him in touch of everything going on.

Well, don't expect too many letters. My son just finished bootcamp on August 18, and I think I recieved 5 or 6 letters and about as many phone calls. They honestly don't have a lot of time, or energy, the first month and a half. The last stages give them more freedom, and time. My son called quite frequently the last 2 or 3 weeks, and was able to talk longer. Initially he was only allowed to talk for 3 minutes. Be patient- I know it's hard. I missed my son like crazy, but I am so proud of him. Write to him frequently- he will really appreciate it. They are starved for information about the outside world when at basic!

Correct he'll be writing more than calling. Depending on D.I.'s phase of training, etc. Usually, calls are only allowed on sundays, during basic. Advanced training may be different depending on his specialty. The more rigorous specialties like infantry, and combat engineers (my original MOS) will be little different from basic. For these, the D.I.'s keep the stress level ramped up throughout, instead lightening up in other areas. (Not aggrandizing, just that there's no point in making life miserable for non-frontline soldiers)
How often will you get letters? Every time he writes one. He'll likely be homesick, but VERY VERY busy, and VERY VERY VERY tired. Give an 18yo guy in Bootcamp a choice between sleep and sex? Let's just say he'll have to wrestle with the decision.

You probably won't hear from him for the first 2 weeks since they have to go through processing and what not. I think my hubby mentioned that they can only mail out on 1-2 days a week or something like that. I've been getting 2-3 letters at a time from him right now.

I'm a military wife and come from a large military family. I can tell you, it's not all that often I got 3 letters the whole time my husband was gone. Just keep in mind Boot camp is no joke and very hard for him so be patient and understanding. AND WRITE HIM EVERY DAY! I can not stress to you how many men come back upset that other men got more letters then them. It's not a jealousy thing per say, but more of a home sick thing. So many things run through there heads being gone so long it's your job to remind him you love him and miss him and you cant wait till he gets home. Trust me on this one. P.S. Never draw silly lil things on the envelopes or letters they get picked on hard core.

Honestly, he is way too busy to be contacting you often. Once he finishes bootcamp, he will have way more time! Do not bug him, just support him while he is training! Keep in touch with him though. Send him card, care package with his favorite items in it, bake him a cookie or two! You will be in his thoughts if not on paper!

It depends on a lot of things.
If he can use a civilian-run postal service, it might be a lot faster than through the military postal system, if there is one in the US.
Also, he'll most likely be kept very busy, and what time he has to himself he will most likely spend catching up on a few things he's a little weaker one, say, shining boots or cleaning his accomodations. But when I got through, whenever there was time where I had no work to do, I was either helping my mates with their own workload if they were lagging or were on duty, or in my rack catching some extra sleep.

maybe once or twice a week, and sometimes only once a week, he will be very, very, very busy and his time is controled, from when he goes to the bath room to when he eats, when he thinks ( ok joking alittle)
But you need to write him every day and be good in the letters, even if he seems alittle stange or short sometimes, he will go though good and bad times in camp.
but a letter every day, or at least getting 3 in one day after none for a day or two, will mean more than you will ever know
