I'm not sure how it happened, but her toenail is completely gone. I think the bleeding has stopped. I cleaned her toe with warm water and then put some neosporin on it. Now I'm trying to keep a baby sock on her foot. Is there anything else I should do? Should I be worried about infection??

Well, I have gone through this before and I took my dog to the vet and basically they told me to do exactly as you did and just keep it clean and watch for infection.. if you notice any just bring her to the vet. With my dog though she healed just fine and I just made sure to keep it clean and it healed on its own without infection. Just make sure your dog doesnt lick the Neosporin, you can buy gauze wraps at the pharmacy or grocery store and that would probably work better to wrap her foot with and keep her from licking it, although I left my dogs paw unwrapped after initially putting polysporin on it and a wrap for 2 days I let her keep it clean which she did and it healed well. I let her lick it and I just cleaned it with peroxide every day or so after wrapping it and putting polysporin on it. So just keep doing what your doing and keep an eye on it for infection and it should heal on its own.

So far it sounds like you are on the right track!

If you notice any swelling or redness, don't hesitate to call your vet, as infection may set in. This is also a very painful problem for the dog and if it does get infected, it'll be even worse on her. Keep it cleaned and neosporin is great, especially with a sock covering it!! Good job! If you feel any heat on the toes, pad/ foot area (as redness can sometimes be hard to see), that is also a sure sign of infection.

Good luck!

You are doing everything right for the time being. Just keep a very close eye on her toe for ANY sign of infection, change her dressings daily and if you have some peroxide or a disinfectant that wont sting would be best just to make sure there will be no chance of her getting an infection. Good Luck!

you did the right thing, as long as it stopped bleeding. If it were me, I would keep it clean and dry tonight (provided not bleeding), it is probably sore. I would have your vet look at it in the am, as it certainly could be good cause for infection since the nail is missing, you vet will most likely give you meds to ward off infection in the area and something for the pain as well. Good Luck

sounds like you're doing a good job.. if you don't have a styptic pencil, or the powder..like Peachy suggested, and if it should begin to bleed once more, try using cornstarch in the sock. I know years back they made bundles filled with this, and put tied them onto what was left of the tails they cut off. Mind you, this was a very very long time back..
I'd take you pet to the vet, have it cleaned up a bit more if needed, and maybe a shot.. for possible infection
You're doing good hun...

Sounds good to me, same thing I would've done. Just keep an eye on it for infection. Probably call the vet in the a.m. and get some antibiotics to be on the safe side.

I'd suggest seeing a vet if the entire nail came off and it was bleeding. A vet might be able to prescribe an antibiotic or some type of antiseptic that will make the wound heal.

If it starts bleeding again, you can apply some styptic powder or use a styptic pencil or gel and that will stop the bleeding.

You were right to clean it out and try to keep it clean. Not much more you can do than that.

It most likely won't get infected, but keep an eye on it for swelling and discharge. It may be painful for the next few days, so you might ask your vet for a pain killer/antiiflammatory medication.

If the dogs isn't in soreness and is not any longer bleeding, enable it bypass, yet examine it as quickly as an afternoon. If it gets swollen or crimson or warm to touch, if the dogs starts to limp, then he has to bypass to the vet. you may ask mom to call the vet and ask a thank you to maintain it from getting contaminated.
