I think at heart this reflects a lack of radical Love (the kind Jesus preached and lived). Reading a parable with a loving spirit will yield a dramatically different meaning than reading narrowly. The narrow approach feels safer. Christians are very fearful people and do not even know it. I am one who is currently going through the struggle of releasing Fear's death grip in my life, in my heart and soul. It is not an easy thing to do. It feels treacherously dangerous, though that is all illusion. But oh, how real the illusion seems.
Reading parables are very helpful in understanding Love's character, but they must be read with an open heart and critical mind. Dig deep...good advise for you and me.

Christians, if they're bred in southern Bush's US, have problems with parables as well. They want to pass off as scientifically literate and therefore favour literal reading and straightforward language. Therefore the fail at grasping the nuances of life and language.
