Why should Americans learn Spanish if we live in our OWN country?

Question

I'm learning German because I want to GO TO Germany.

So why do so many Mexicans, Central Americans, and South Americans coming here (legally and illegally) refuse to learn our language, and make us learn theirs?

If you disagree, then why are there about 500 students at my school that CANNOT speak english? I may not be perfect, but hey, this country was english speaking since the conception.

because its ignorance , your doing the right thing , how far do you think you would get if you walked into Germany and said , "my grandparents where jewish so you owe me and you have to speak english" ? Chances are nobody would know if you got there or where you were. We are tought to respect coulture and it seems to be limited to some other countrys and people

I can't believe some of the dumb answers to this question. There is no language police, no one is forcing any language on anybody in the United States. English is a global standard for business, and science, and there have been movements to make it the official language of the US. A little knowledge of other languages is helpful, especially in the southwestern US. I beg to differ, English was imposed on Native Americans, Spanish imposed on indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica and then there's French Canada.

For those who think it's no big deal, look in the classified help wanted sections in the paper and see how many ads say "Bi-lingual preferred". A lot of places won't hire you if you can't speak Spanish. (in Texas)
You might say, well then learn Spanish. Noooo... it's the other way around. People from foreign lands need to learn English.
There's nothing wrong with learning Spanish but an American shouldn't be required to know it in order to get a job in the U.S.

I am not going to learn spanish unless I go somewhere they speak it. I live in an English speaking nation and I think if you want to live in my country it is the correct thing to learn the language!

They do not understand that this is not their country. They still have Mexican pride and are only hear to reap the benefits that the USA has to offer. I never met a Mexican or a PR that appreciates what the united states gives them. I feel that many have an memento were they feel as though they deserve any thing and every thing that they can get from America and have no intent on repaying or even at least honoring this great country by learning our language. Maybe they just don't have the smarts to. I mean why should WE go out of are way and put up all the bilingual sighs and why cant I go any were with out hearing some god offal "meeta meeta" spickick language. Its unfair that classes slow down for kids that cant speak English, Its really hurting the other kids.

We shouldn't have to unless you WANT to. This country was founded on English but it's slowly being transformed into a Spanish speaking country. Will pesos replace our money too??

Catering to them only makes it easier for them to come here. They talk and communicate with their family back home and tell them "yeah come on everything is in Spanish now you don't have to worry about learning English when you get here"...and then here comes more and more illegals.

We should not learn Spanish.... it is a backwards language.... and it is not a language of success... English is the language of success in America and most of the world.

They refuse to learn English because they don't want to be Americans, they just want to STEAL from America....

Non-English speaking students do not belong in American schools.... they are destroying our educational system.... wasting teachers time and school system dollars... ie: stealing from the American taxpayer....

ILLEGAL ALIENS are CRIMINALS and must be deported along with their children.... with all haste...

It's sad but if you work in places where there are alot of Latino's you're probably going to have to learn basic Spanish. I work in the healthcare field and basic Spanish is a must, you have to give all your patients care regardless of what lanuage they speak. Give Spanish speakers a generation or two and they will be speaking English better than us.

I feel the same way. I walk in to place all over and all I will here is Spanish on the radio or on the TV. I disgusts me. Some thing should be done, but I am not sure if we can do anything. its starting to look like they are taking over our country, in stead of joining with us.

immigrants don't refuse to learn English my friend.....

you being a fellow student of foreign language must know that for someone to acquire a second language it takes time.... experts say it takes 5 years to acquire cognitive academic language proficiency!!!!!!!!

i can't speak for the students at your school because i know nothing about them..... but before you pass judgment perhaps you need to take this into account.....

NOBODY is forcing you to speak Spanish!!!!!! that statement is just stupid and wrong!!!!!

by the way when this country was conceived!!!!! many languages including English, Spanish, dutch, German, and native American were spoken!!!!!

language is just a means of communication..... the English language does not have more value than another language..... by the way in Deutschland 70% Germans speak a second language..... perhaps they know something you don't..... maybe you should hurry up and get over there and open you eyes and your heart!!!!!!!
