What else could be near as important? What keeps us from putting more resources into space probes and projects like SETI? Is there anything about Christianity (major religion in USA) that discourages the idea that there is more life in the universe?

In my experience, having grown up going to church, most American Christians do not believe there is life on other planets. I do not believe there is a Biblical basis for this.

In fact, I am a Christian that does believe that there is life elsewhere in the universe.

I think SETI is totally awesome and should be perused, along with probes.

All major religions fear that an advanced race would bring their god to earth and because they are "advanced", humans will embrace this new god. The truth is that we do not allow any race to contaminate other species with delusional god concepts. Your planet would not be allowed to expand beyond the orbit of the planet Mars unless you overcome this infantile need for god concepts. We don't think the rest of the galaxy has a lot to worry about in that regard. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

There is nothing in Christianity that says there is no life in other parts of the universe. But, if there is, God created it since the odds of life coming to be by chance far exceed the Dirac limit.

As for SETI--put the money into helping people on this planet!

Some churches do some dont. I think it would help if you looked it up in the Catholic Encylopedia. They might have had a bad track record with sceince 500 years ago but they are pretty good today. I think that is an open question and they say that they dont know. Look it up for yourself I think Life is everywhere.
Personally I dont think we should be looking outward until we have solved our inner problems. Space probes should be used to collect data on how best to feed our children. feed our children Live in peace and possibly Those others will bother to talk to us.

Yes Christianity has something against the idea of other life. They don't know anything about it and believe that they are the blessed ones made in God's own image. They know for themselves only that if there was anything important out there that God would have informed them. (A little self indulgent and self centered if you want my opinion) Also they do not believe in evolution which would make it hard for them to understand why then God would have created something else.

I expect that within the next 20 to 30 years, we will be coming to terms with the fact that life is as common as dirt in the universe.

SETI, is just beginning to bring the Allen telescope array on-stream. Also, the next generation of telescopes will be coming on line soon. The next 10 years will be very exciting... and for some people, very disturbing. The 'God of the Gaps' is going to have to get his dancin' shoes on... and Christian Apologists are REALLY going to have to work for their money.

i am not christian. But i do think that there are other kinds of life on this universe. I think taht discovering it though, is not the best idea. I think if we need to discover that life it would only be because this earth was dying or overcrowding. otherwise i think the other life on the universe should just be left how they are.

No, I do not see how it is so important. But if there is life in the universe out of earth, that would not make me not to believe in God.

What else could be more important? How about trying to sort out the supposedly 'intelligent' life on this world before looking for it on others?

The problem is the universe is a huge place so that life may be much too far away for us ever to find.
