Well it does do some damage to your hair. You'll have to work with it every morning or it will frizz. If you can handle all that, then go for it. I had one and I did enjoy it. It got to the point as it grew out the top was flat and the sides got real frizzy. But realize too that I have baby fine hair.

It depends on the health of your hair and your hair type to begin with. I for instance have very straight fine hair and when I would get a perm I would get a spiral. If you have some length in your hair that would be the best way to go and it is very important that you go to someone who has been a hairdresser for a while and knows what they are doing or else you may end up with a head full of fried hair (that happened to me also!)
I also have to say that because my hair is so fine, it caused damage every time I got a perm breaking off some hair at the scalp. It was not visible but I knew it was there!
If you want to test the waters so to speak you could compromise and get a body perm or wave to see how you like it but yes always, always go to someone who knows all types of hair and owns or operates their own salon. Those are the ones with the most on the line cause you will be a walking billboard for them! Hope that helps!
Oh and one more thing...never double process...If you color your hair I would steer clear of perms!

It damages your hair considerably! Understand that most perms have a PH of around 8 or 9. Your hair is 4.5. The alkaline stripes your hair of the natural hyrdrogen bonds that keep your hair healthy. My best suggestion- get a diffuser. They sell them at target- it attaches to your hair dryer and creats the "stimulation" of curls. Youll love it!

It does damage hair. It is a chemical. They do look good.
Just be sure you condition good, and have your hair trimmed regularly. And never, ever, brush it, just pick it out...

Best of luck to you....

Go to a reputable hair dresser to get your hair done and you should be alright. Get references from friends and where they get their hair done and are pleased with the results. good luck
