The world "one" in our daily conversation conveys any of the following meanings:

(01) "Man" and "Horse" are one (because both are mammals). Here 'one' describes that both man and horse belong to the same genus.

(02) "John" and "Smith" are one. 'One' here shows that both are of the same species.

(03) You say pointing to two carpenters that they are one. Here 'one' means that both have same profession. Or the same adjective can be used for both.

(04) Churchill was an orator, writer, soldier and statesman. You may say that his oratory, penmanship, soldier ship and statesmanship were one, because they were combined in one person.

(05) One-pint milk and one-pint water are 'one', because both have the same quantity.

(06) Hot milk and hot water are 'one' because both are in the same condition.

(07) John and Smith are standing. You may say 'They are one', because both are in the same position.

(08) Robert has two sons, John and Smith. John and Smith are one, because they have the same relation with Robert.

(09) A human-body or a chair is one, because its components or parts are joined together. (But if the parts are disjoined or disintegrated, this 'one' will become millions).

(10) The beginning of counting is called 'one' as the beginning of theoretical line is called point. Countless numbers follows this 'one'.

(11) A matchless or unique person or thing is called one, as, for example, we may say that the sun within our solar system is 'one' because it has no equal within this system.

BUT all these meanings of 'unity' carry the idea of 'duality' or 'plurality' because meaning nos. 1 to 9 show that 'two' or 'more' things are 'one' in some respect. So 'two' or 'more' are always present in these meanings.

'One' as beginning of number or count pre-supposes more than one thing.

A unique thing may be called one, but it is just a metaphorical use which has no relation with reality, because that unique thing, being made of matter, has millions of parts - is not one.

When we say 'God is one', we take none of these meanings in consideration. Unity of God means that He has no parts, no body; He is not divisible even in imagination.
GOD CANNOT BE MORE THAN ONE

God cannot be more than one. Why these bold assertion? There are various reasons. In addition to some of the proofs given earlier, here are two more:

First Proof: It has been proved earlier that God is Eternal. And also it has been proved that Eternal cannot be a compound, mixture or mixed thing.

Now suppose there are two identical pens. They are similar in shape, size, colour and all qualities. Still, they are two, each having a separate identity. So each pen has two kinds of qualities: first, the common qualities which make one pen similar to the other; second, the distinguishing qualities which give each pen its separate entity and identity. In other words, each pen of the set is a compound of mixed lot of two separate properties.

This happens in all examples where two similar things exist side by side. It would surely happen if two Eternals were to exist side by side.

It means that if there were two Eternals they would both be compound. Each would have a common quality, i.e. Eternity; and a distinguishing quality, which would give it a separate personality. This would mean that Eternal would be a compound, which we already have proved to be impossible.

Therefore, God being Eternal cannot be more than one.

Second proof: suppose there were two gods. Could one of them over-ride the decision of the other? If yes, then the second one is weaker than the first, and therefore is not omnipotent, not a god at all. If 'No', then the first one is weaker than the second and therefore not omnipotent, not a god at all.

And if both think and act exactly on similar lines, then what is the need to suppose two gods at all? One god is enough to run this universe!

answer to JeSuSfReA...:
Even heaven and hell are not eternal. They were created by God. God--only God is Alpha and Omega.

This can get very deep and leads to unresolvable, yet necessary mysteries. So, I'll just pick a place and begin.

We have a mind by which we make choices, experience feelings, and that is not shared by others. We have a body and brain which is intimately tied to this mind. The mind does not appear to function without the brain. Christians believe that we also have an eternal soul, but others will debate that.

Now is this mind and body (and soul) the same one thing, or is it three aspects of one thing? Are they of the same essence and work for the same purpose, are they different perspectives of one single thing, or are they three separate things that are temporarily joined? I think you can see that there are multitudes of ways in which even eternal, non-physical hypostases can be described as both three and one simultaneously.

God is just, righteous, and good. He is one God. God became flesh, yet remained immanent and transcendent simultaneously. God is one. (An eternal, immanent, transcendent hypostasis need not conform to physical laws of location, size, time, or number.) God comforts us and guides us as we are sensitive to His call. This since Old Testament times has been called the Holy Spirit. This Spirit is still God and God is still one.

The Shema

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Your question shows elements of confusion. I have never seen it proven that "Eternal cannot be a compound". In fact, if that were the case, then all existence would be impossible, because existence is compound by its very nature.

The Bible starts right from the beginning with God described as more than one.

Genesis 1:26 - "Then God said, "Let US make man in OUR image, in OUR likeness,..."

In the New Testament, God, Jesus and the Apostles describe God in familiar terms: Father, son, wife, sister, brother, mother, daughter. It should be clear to you that a family is composed of multiple persons, yet it is still ONE family.

John describes the Godhead prior to Jesus's conception thus: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" -- clearly describing two persons in the Godhead.

Jesus, toward the end of his physical life prayed to the Father thus: "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; THAT THEY ALL MAY BE ONE, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; THAT THEY MAY BE ONE IN US, that the world may believe that You sent Me." (John 17:20-21)

However, this unity does not mean loss of will or power, but submission in love. As Jesus said, "not my will be done, but thine." Jesus clearly had a separate and distinct will, but he willingly suppressed it to do God the Father's will.

BTW, there is a couple of onenesses that you did not list:
Matt 19:4-6 -- "And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."

Ephesians 5:31-32 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church."

ok, your first proof is wrong. there are two eternities. heaven and hell, therefore wherever you got that eternal cannot be a compound is wrong. (they are considered 'one' by one of your definitions). secondly, God is a trinity. the God-head is God the Father, then there is God the Son (Jesus), and God the Spirit (the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost). God can be whatever He wants! He is all powerful. he makes whatever He wants, and He made himself to have 3 parts. it is confusing because we call him 'He,' but really there's three. but if you look at Him as the Father, He is only one. only one God does rule the universe, you just have to believe that he has three parts. "for without faith it is impossible to please God..." Heb. 11:6. believe that God is three parts, and you will please Him. if not, you won't please Him and it won't matter what you think cuz you'll be in hell! its that simple to go hell, and its also that simple to believe He is three parts.

Bloody hell, some questions are just too long to read, so I haven't bothered with this one. I mean, come on, life's too short for such nonsense. Put your Bible/Koran/any other 'holy' book of your choice away and go for a walk in the fresh air - you'll feel so much better.

"God" or "Jesus" or "Mohammed" or "E=Meter" or any other kind of religion is very subjective. There is no point in trying to convince any one else of a religious thought. Religion is by nature not interested in facts, it is interested in faith. Therefore, the entire concept of discussing religion is moot. That is why there is no answer to your question. ;-)

Its all one energy that is one all the time......the problem is that this physical vessel every life form comes in confuses us to believe we are seperate.

You are getting lost in the universal maze of knowledge.....don't listen to the static....listen to the clear messages that you know are true the second you think of them.
