My friend had a pair of really expensive ear plugs that lowered the sound but didn't distort or modify it at all. Does anyone know what I am talking about? I am a musician who plays loud concerts and am in need of ear protection, but normal ear plugs distort the sound way too much to be used. Then I heard about these, but I don't know what they are called or if they work or not. Can anyone give me any information at all?

They are called Noise-cancelling headphones, and many places sell them.

If you are not talking about noise-cancellation, then maybe you need "closed-back" headphones (not earbuds), Something like these:

There are also earbuds that provide "high isolation" of outside sounds, like these:

Sounds like Bose "quiet comfort" earbuds.
