If you get a card reader, no additional software is necessary. This is not only faster, but it saves your camera batteries. Your computer or printer may even have a card reader built into it. I have enough USB ports that I just leave it plugged in all the time.

First of all, be sure there are some pictures on the card. Plug the card reader into an open USB port. Plug the card into the appropriate slot on your card reader. I use Photoshop Elements and as soon as I plug my card into the reader, it starts its own card reader and displays a thumbnail of every picture on the card.

If this does not happen automatically, open your photo editting software. Do whatever you usually do to open a file, but click on the selector where you can change drives. Your card reader will be assigned a new drive name that will be one letter higher than you ever saw before, such as "Drive G:" or such. Then, just double click on the name of the file you want to open and it will appear in your photo editor.

I don't know how adapters work or anything, so I can't help you out there. But keep looking for any cords that came with your camera, because if it was new, it came with a USB cord that will connect your camera to your computer. From there, you just need to turn on your camera (in some you need to select "transfer" on the menu) and open up the folder that will appear in "My computer" and your photos should be in there. If you have a USB drive, hook it into your computer, and then stick your SD card in the slot that it fits into. It should automatically download everything into a folder in My Computer. Hope you figure it out!

you don't need the cord.
you are almost there.
here's what you have to do:
1. connect the 5in1 adapter to the computer (with USB cord)
2. turn off camera.
take Sd card out of camera
3. put SD card in adapter (make sure label side up)
4. go to "my computer" in windows. if mac os x, then disk drive will show up on desktop.
5. under "my computer", look for your SD disk and open it
6. find list of files and transfer them to your hard drive by grabbing and moving them over

alternately, you can use photo software (like Iphoto or Adobe Photoalbum) that will automatically detect the flash drive and move the photos for you
