You need to volunteer in your community. You need to join other clubs and groups in your school. With basketball, good grades and the other things that I mentioned it should help. Also make sure that you take accelerated classes; not just the easy stuff.

a huge key to getting into college besides grades and sport, is extracurricular activities (like you mentioned an after skool program). Volunteering is a big plus on applications, as well as being in groups/organizations. Pick something you like to do and spend a little time each weak helping out. Also, you need to take standardized tests ( ACT or SAT). Good luck

Forget that nonsense about extracurriculars. It's hype.

What colleges want is committment. If you are committed to excellence in those two things: grades and basketball, you'll be fine.

If basketball doesn't do it for you (grades are kind of a necessity) then find something you can commit to.

Anything else is good, but not essential. And don't overdo it w/ the extracurricular acitivities. That's a sure sign that you are NOT committed. If you pursue something, do it w/ your whole heart. And be prepared to explain that on your admissions paperwork and interviews.

To get into college it is very necessary to have the good grades as well as participation in the sport activities, but it helps alot when you are in other clubs and societies, especially service clubs, or even volunteer services. try to obtain leadership positions if you can, because it shows the schools that you have leadership qualities.
It is a very good idea to takes lots and lots of photos of yourself doing these activities, it really does count!

I read recently that volunteer work was too common now and didn't really count as much. Make sure that anything you do is for YOU-the schools are getting hip on all those people who do stuff only for the transcript.
