This website helped me a lot when I was looking into this exact same question...
http://www.costofwedding.com/

It also helped to keep me sane when I felt like I was spending way too much money...

My wife and I have now been married for nearly 42 years.

She was an only child and her parents wanted to make a very large wedding.

We had over 100 people in a very expensive hotel, top menu, large band, expensive dress, Rolls Royce - the lot.

Many people tried to tell them that it would be better to give the couple the money and just have a small wedding for the close family, but they were adamant. They only had one daughter and she was going to get "The Works."

The other people were right.
How we struggled for many years. That money would have come in so handy.

To most of the guests it was just another function. Forgotten within a few weeks.

mine cost 50 for the license and 20 for the ceremony. But I plan on giving her a real wedding when we can save up some money

The average cost of a wedding is $20,000-$30,000. This by no means says that yours needs to be this expensive (or can't be more expensive!)

That's like asking what is the average cost of a birthday party! People spend what they decide to spend according to their priorities and circumstances-- there is no "average." Anywhere from $100 to $100,000,000.

Purely a guess...$25,000.00, although I have personally heard of weddings going into the hundred thousand range. (insane) I have two daughters on the "steps of the altar" and am limiting them each to $20,000.00. Why? Because we (their parents) think that $20,000.00 is way enough (actually too much) to spend on a wedding. Lucky for us, they don't "expect" anything and appreciate and respect our budgeting limitations. Good luck!

My wedding only costed $2,000. B/c we didn't have much money, made things that we wanted, instead of buying them. Making the stuff we wanted only made them more special. Like for instance....we wanted a cazebo. If we would have bought it, it would have been $1,000. We made it for $200.

It entirely depends on the wedding. They range from a couple hundred to thousands.

Approx. $27,000.00 but this will vary from state to state... so don't let it scare the heck out of you! It will also vary greatly depending on the number of guests you will have at your reception. Some costs are fixed (photographer is the same price regardless of # of guests) but the cost for a reception will vary greatly depending on the # of guests.

100 or so guests. cake, flowers, music, hall rental, invitations, dresses, tuxedos, decorations, food, drinks, pictures, plates, utensil, cups,
With help from family and friends.

$8,000 minimum.
We did it on 5 thousand about 13 years ago and we did a lot of the stuff ourselves and we had over 400 guests. I even sewed the beads on my wedding dress myself.
