He could be just bored and has nothing better to do. Why not just ask? Make it clear that you are not asking for a marriage commitment or anything at this early point in the relationship, just whether or not he is interested.

NO unless we were both lonely and she was a good friend And I thought that she was aware that is all we were .
Id make sure that this fella knows that you are dating and not just hanging out with each other as friends .
He may just be a bit stand offish and need you to take charge of setting about making your relationship official.
