I am an Orthodontist and can probably help you with this question. The treatment time is harder to guess but generally it is any where between 18 - 30 months. Placing braces if fairly easy. The first step is to clean your teeth with a coarse material called pumice. The purpose is to clean your teeth. The next step is to etch and prime your teeth for bonding the brackets.

Bonding brackets is done in 2 ways. Majority of the orthodontist place the brackets directly on your teeth with blue and shine a blue light to make harden the glue. This is called direct bonding. The disadvantage with this technique, it takes long time and is hard to position the brackets just right.

Fewer Orthodontists (including myself) place brackets by Indirect bonding. In this technique the brackets are positioned on your models and transferred to a glue or plastic tray. Once your teeth are cleaned, cleaned, etched and primed, the entire tray is placed in your mouth and the glue is cured with blue light. This cuts down the placement time and also results in more precise bracket placement. Studies also show that Indirect bonding cuts down the total treatment time by 6 - 8 months. The disadvantage with this technique is that it is labor intensive and technique sensitive but once you do it couple of times, it's a piece of cake.

Once your brackets are placed, a very light wire called Nitinol is placed. And then you can walk out. Depending on your case and the kind of wire placed, you will be seen anywhere between 6-10 week intervals. During this appointments, they may place ties back on (if there is still crowding to be relieved) or change into stiffer stainless steel arch wires. Regarding the colors, in my office, it changes from season and holidays. Some people like clear but they stain easily; if you drink coffee, eat any thing with food color, mustard or smoke. A better option would be tooth colored ties. Some of my patients get a different color for each tooth but majority gets 2 or 3 colors. In addition, your Orthodontist should give you’re a color wheel to help you choose. After the braces and wires are placed, we give oral hygiene sinstructions and what foods to avoid. In addition there is a small bag which consists of a toothbrush, travel toothbrush, flow threader, proxa brush, wax and some other miscellaneous things. Hope that helps

I have braces right now, and I don't know if all orthodontists have the same colors, but just get whatever is your favorite color. My orthodontist lets me get 2 colors, and sometimes I coordinate them with holidays, like halloween coming up, try to keep in mind when you will have your next appointment. They give you wax most of the time to use when your lips or cheeks are sore from the brackets, but I think most people don't have a problem with it, even though I did and still do. When I first got them, I went every 4 weeks, but now I go every 6 weeks (2 years later). Try not to be scared, I think the only part that I didn't like was having the big thing in my mouth, and them blowing the air on my teeth because I hate that, but I think you'll be fine. Most of my guy friends that had braces didn't complain at all, so I think you'll be fine. Stick in there!

My daughter had braces put on and you can get two different colors every time they change them. She got some mouth rinse, toothpaste, toothbrush, a little brush to clean between the braces, Oragel for her gums, some kind of wax stuff to put on the braces if they scraped her gums, and some Tylenol. After a couple of days they didn't bother her and she was eating fine. She also had to have a Phlenectomy. That was the worst part. Her braces are off now and she has a beautiful smile as I am sure you will have too. Good Luck

Get your school colors this month and switch to black and orange next month. The color is just from the little rubber bands that have to be changed all the time anyhow, so this is not a decision that you will be stuck with for the next 2-3 years.

You might be given some "orthodontic wax" to help sort of pad the rough places until your cheeks get used to your braces.

the brackets are =metal or silver in color, they also have some clear brackets. those are the small squares glued on your teeth to place a silver band through them and the band that goes across you teeth is what helps to straighten them and the rubber bands keep the band in place, the band and rubber bands will be replaced monthly and each time it will feel tighter. the rubber band come in colors but they are placed in the dental office by the Dentist or his assistant. the first time ther will be some pain and getting used too. the Dentist will give you a special tooth brush, wax to cover the brackets if necessary because they may cut the inside of you lip or make it feel uncomfortable, you will salivate alot until you get used to them, learn to talk different. but this will go away in time and yes it is worth it. oh! no gum chewing or biting into hard stuff. good luck and good dental health.

I got braces and had the "newer" kind that didnt need colors to hold them together, so i never had to deal with that. I would get a more neutral color, or maybe your school colors?
I know they'll give you wax to help with your brackets rubbing against your lips, but i never used it because i didnt want to have my lips never get used to my braces.
I think they'll give you a toothbrush, and stuff like that.
Also they give you stuff you can floss your teeth with, around your brackets.
Goodluck

Dude, I was never lucky enough to have had braces. So please, PLEASE ask your Dentist if you can get them to look like barbed wire. That would be awsome! Tell them (in front of your parents) that they will match your tattoo.

But, if they don't have barbed wire look, I'd get something in an earth tone, maybe sand colored. That would go with just about anything.
