Ghost towns are town out west that were built usually during the gold rush. Once all the gold was gone, people left the towns abandoned and all that were left were the ghosts.

The term 'ghost town' refers to any town that is now abandoned (or mostly abandoned). It is a reference to the fact that now nobody lives there except for ghosts. They are mostly associated with the western United States. As other posters have noted, many ghost towns are old mining camps that were founded between the 1850s and early 1900s. Once the ore ran out, the people moved away often leaving behind buildings and machinery. Not all ghost towns were mining camps though. Farming, ranching and railroad ghost towns exist as well.

Some of the towns had populations in the thousands during their peak, although most of them were much smaller (a few hundred people). There are hundreds of ghost towns around the western United States, but don't expect to see rows of old buildings with the furniture still inside. Most ghost towns have only faint foundations and rubble and maybe one or two partially collapsed buildings at the most. A few rare ghost towns do have a large number of standing buildings, but these are mostly on private property, still have a few inhabitants or are now historic sites.

A few of the better, and more famous, ghost towns in the west include Swansea and Vulture City in Arizona, Bodie in California, Rhyolite in Nevada and Animas Forks in Colorado. There are also plenty of other places that were historic towns and now call themselves 'ghost towns' but either have a fairly large number of inhabitants or are partially-restored tourist attractions. These include Tombstone and Jerome in Arizona and Calico in California.

Most were towns that sprung up due to a gold/silver find. After the gold/silver ran out, the people packed up and moved on, thus leaving the town empty. It then became a "ghost" of its past.
