My fiance is Jamaican and I would love to have a beach theme wedding but we are getting married at the end of January. We live in Maine. I think this is a cute combination of Jamaican and Mainer but I am afraid people may think it is weird. What are your thoughts?

If it is indoors, it will be fine. I think it's a great idea! You could combine the two ocean themes by splitting them up.... Main/Nantucket looking decor for the brides section of the reception and tropical Jamaican for the grooms side!

Maine's side should be lots of white... starfish, light and dark blues.... very Martha Stweartish. The other side should be brighter... more colorful and tropical.

Check out www.breezybeachwear.com in their apparel section. They have a fun "island Bride" and "Island Groom" T-shirt that you two could get for your
Honeymoon! I also recommend a pretty silk flower hair clip for you to wear from their flower clip section. Check out Beach Wedding Swarovski and North Star. Or go with a bright one instead to wear to your honeymoon! :)

As a New Englander myself, I think that would be a GREAT idea! Especially the end of January... you know how the winters can be sooo long for some people! And January especially. So a wedding with a beach theme would probably be a very welcome escape from the cold weather outside. What a cute idea... and I think the fact that your fiance is Jamaican just makes it all that more appropriate. Have fun with it and DEFINITELY go with it! I'd love to go to a wedding like that! :o)

What is weird the fact that its winter the fact that its a beach party or the fact that your friends might not understand .
Hey its your day its no one Else's and if you cant have a say in your own wedding then....Wedding is a flop.
Cook some of those Maine lobsters and sink your toes into the sand play a little Calypso music and dance with the man of your dreams under the cool winter stars I cant think that it would be any thing other than hugely ROMANTIC . Great theme and a moment that you both will look back on in your later years and think We had a fun and original wedding more than most couples that are joined in a chapel.

There must be some other aspect of Jamaican culture-- food, music, etc-- that you can use in your indoor wedding! I think a beach-themed wedding in January and not ON a beach would be strange, indeed.

Like an ocean-themed wedding in Nebraska. No point and awkward.

But maybe you could just incorporate some Jamaican or beach aspects in your wedding cake design, rather than go whole-hog with an entirely indoor beach theme? That would be better.

And be sure to serve Red Stripe beer!

I think it's perfectly appropriate, but I'm familiar with winter in northern New England, so I think it needs to be inside! I'd look for a resort hotel that has function rooms with a gorgeous beach view...which is about as close to the beach as most of your guests will want to be. You can probably get an excellent rate since you're having your wedding at what would normally be a beach resort's slowest time of year.

As everyone else said-it's your wedding! But, also-it serves a purpose. People might think the idea in general is weird; however, since your fiance is Jamaican it symbolizes something and I think people will recognize that and love the idea.

Go for it!

I think that you should do what makes you happy. A beach theme wedding may be just what your friends and family need to break the monotony of winter. At the end of the day, you will be married to the man of your dreams, regardless of what type of wedding you have. So, do what makes you happy. You only get one chance (hopefully!!).

This is YOUR wedding - a reflection of YOU and YOUR Fiancee. I think that having a wedding that celebrates who you are and the things that you enjoy is the best wedding that YOU can have. Please don't become just another number in a whole fluury of weddings that your guests will attend in their lives. Make yours a reflection of you. And aside from a beach theme being your own style, I would think it would be a refreshing positive spin in the artic cold of a new england winter, as a new englander myself.

What would your fiance and his family like - are they keen for the beach theme as well? If all parties are keen (and I would, to be frank, worry that it wasn't a bit "Jamaican = beach" stereotypical), then by all means go for it.

It is your wedding, and presumably the people you are inviting are the family and friends you are most close to, who will appreciate, respect and celebrate your wishes.

It's your wedding, and actually, I think it's a wonderful idea. And I'm sure your friends and family wouldn't mind getting a break from shovelling snow out of thier driveways to come see a beautiful wedding ceremony on the beach.
