'Femme' is indeed the french translation for 'wife'. However, 'une femme' means 'a woman'; for it to translate as 'wife', you need to say 'ma femme' or 'sa femme' or something like that. In other words, rather than saying 'femme' for 'wife', they say '[so and so]'s woman' rather than '[so and so]'s wife'.

Yes...

Une femme= a woman
une femme= a wife
ma femme = my wife

A guy says: "Je cherche une femme" could have several meaning though...

1- I'm looking for a wife...
2- I'm looking for a woman..
3- I'm looking for "a girl"...
4- I'm looking for a mate....
5- etc...

Have to be careful...

Yes. In french, wife is la femme, or if you wanted to say "one wife" it would be une femme. So you're correct!
But usually people wouldn't say "a wife" or "one wife". They would say "my wife" or "your wife" and in french, "my wife" is "Ma femme" and "your wife" is "ta femme." So keep that in mind too :-)
