Depending on their ages, start with the Dolch word lists - these are the most commonly used words in the English language. You can find the list online by searching for "Dolch word list". I would only use two or three at a time and have the rest be rhyming words (cat, fat, sat, ...) After this, there are several good programs available, but you will have to pay for them.
If you find that your kids are good spellers, you might want to use the words they misspell, or challenging words from their reading. My 6th grader is a great speller, so we dropped spelling for vocabulary this year.
Some of the more popular spelling programs are:
Spelling Power: http://www.castlemoyle.com/
Spelling Workout: http://plgcatalog.pearson.com/program_multiple.cfm?site_id=12&program_id=836&searchType=Title&searchTerm=Spelling%20Workout
Sequential Spelling: http://www.avko.org/Webstore/Sequential_Spelling.htm )
We used Dr. Fry's word lists for years: http://www.barbsbooks.com/DrFryPhonics.htm
Also, check out the selection at Rainbow Resource: http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1158545048-1594655&subject=8

You could use their writings and take misspellings from there for spelling words or you could buy Spelling Power which has the 5000 most commonly misspelled words in the American Language. That program covers from grades 2-12 and beyond. Also, you could do both.
We do dictations and written work so I usually take misspelled words from there. Before we do dictations though we go over the selection to be dictated and I ask them if there are any words that they believe will give them problems and we work on it that way so that they know the correct spelling before spelling it wrong. This helps them to concentrate on visualizing the words.

If you are home schooling you should have an English or literature book. Use words that challenge your children as well as the book that they are reading from your local library. You can also find work at your local home school offices.

Go to Yahoo or Google and type in list of Spelling Words for grade ? it should list some for you or call your local school district and talk to the person in charge of home school education. They should be able to help you.
GOOD LUCK!
Thanks,

How about the dictionary? Find words that you think will challenge them. Not stymie them...Just challenge them
