Hello, I have two kids, a two and a half year old girl and a nine month old girl. We only have my mom who can babysit for us and my husband and I want to find a casual babysitter. I'm just wondering if anyone has tips regarding how to find a babysitter we can really trust or how to find out if we can really trust someone before we let them stay with our kids. It's so hard to know what to do. Thanks!

Post your request in places that you trust like your church or the school in your neighborhood so that you can get in contact with this person, not just a fly by night person. Then interview them, have some well thought out questions. Choose more than one so that you will have a backup. Maybe if this person is a teenager, meet the parents...

you can look at nanny clubs or let the high school guidence couslers suggest someone for you also you can look at senior center sometimes there are relativly young grandma types who love kids and can use some extra money. as for trusting someone ask tons of questions if there a teen speak to there parents to there teachers ask for refrences at least 6 and not family and friends. and then spend time with her watch her with the kids a couple of times before you leave her alone with them make sure he or she knows the rules of the house if you choose a sitter that drives which is best ask for a copy of her driving record these same things apply with an adult comming into your home. and once you have done everything you can you just kinda have to jump in unless you want to be completley paranoid and instal security camera's. but watch your child if your find them really freaking out when they see the baby sitter (of course they will cry a little because they dont want you to go) or if you come home to find them dirty or unexplainable marks fire her. and good luck i know personaly i dont leave my youngest with anyone except family and or close family friends.

I would consider contacting the nearest college that offers Early Childhood Education or equivalent of that where you are you could ask if the instructor would ask her/his class if anyone would like a casual job. Students are always looking for extra money and they are going to school to become Early Childhood Educators. Ask them to come over for an interview and spend time with them and your children. Observe and see if they fit well together. Ask questions!!! babycenter.com and todaysparent.com has lots of articles on finding child care - I would definitely check those two sites out for more information. Hope this helps.

Get a few different teenage girls. Post things up in churches or someplace like that and you'd be sure to get a nice, friendly, polite girl looking to earn some money.

talk to the person, show up unexpectedly at thier house one day so you can see how their house really is, not the cleaned up version. look around the house for possible safety hazards (that is unless you plan on having them at your house). go off your instinct, that is the best thing, if you have ANY bad feelings about it, you are probably right.
