I was told that they do this to leave their scent and mark the spot as their territory. I believe this because my dog will sniff around when we're out walking in this field until what seems like forever, and then she'll inevitably choose to go right around her same old spots where she's gone before. It's maddening because a lot of times she'll act like she's going to go then she'll double back to one of "her" spots. Then she'll do that kicking the dirt thing with her hind legs.

Dogs kick the dirt or grass to stimulate the bowel. Often times they are not finished with their business and this is their way of finding out.

Yep, it's to leave their scent. Like others have said they're marking their territory. Both of my Shih-tzus do this (Male and Female), my Lab cross just looks at them like they're nuts ;o)

They try to cover it up but they arent smart enough like cats some do it and some dont its nothing bad its just what they learned from their parents or they inherited it!

They have scent glands in there paws ,so there marking there territory that way.

They do it in order to leave their scent. My Maltese (male) does it every time, my Shih-Tzu mix (female) does it sometimes.

because some have enough manners to cover it up after. they don't want to have to look at it.
