I agree, if more people smoked weed rather than drinking to excess the world would be a happier (or should that be hippier) place.
The reason it is not legal is because it has the word 'DRUG' associated with it when in fact is a naturally occurring plant! Any association with drugs has the right wing killjoys screaming about how it will only lead to harder drugs, which, quite frankly, is a load of piffle and balderdash!!! There will always be a few who do move on to harder drugs but just because they had a joint before they did anything else is not proof that it 'leads you into other drugs'. It is simply because it is easier to find!!!
Unfortunately, there is no chance that booze will be banned. It is too instilled in the culture of this (and most other) country. Besides that, the government gets huge revenues from tax on alcohol

I fully agree that weed should be legalised - life would be so much easier & it would remove the stigma - as well as helping more people benefit from it (eg Arthritis sufferers) without being scared of legal implications.
I dont know why the government wont do it but alcohol is legal cos prohibition doesnt work & if they tax it they can make money.
I dont think what you call "booze heads" are "the scum of the UK" at all...in fact I know a lot of people who drink "scum" is the last thing Id describe them as!

Easy Jesus turned water into wine, mind you the bible is not clear on whether Jesus or the owners of the premises on which the transformation took place, or the party organisers paid the tax due on alcohol arising from this transformation so it is not clear if in supporting the consumption of alcohol Jesus was also supporting tax avoidance.
There is however no evidence of jesus using pot.
As this is for the time being a largely christian country Booze must stay legal.
When islam takes over then booze will be banned, that is shortly after hell freezes over.

I can clearly see how it is making the country unsafe for its inhabitants and also, the link between crime and alcohol abuse. I live in Zone 2 in London and every Friday and Saturday night, returning from my own night out, I see people being kicked and punched, others vomiting, women being physically/sexually abused by men as they are too drunk to defend themselves and still others who have passed out and therefore placed themselves in danger of attack, robbery, rape or worse. I am not saying that people should not consume alcohol or that alcohol should be banned. However, I believe that being a heavy user of alcohol and then using it as an excuse for ruining someone else's night is an issue that this society has failed to address and as long as it fails to do so, being bottled or touched inappropriately (or worse) is a risk that every person in this country will continue to run every evening when and if they leave their home. A matter of concern for me also is why people feel the need to drink to excess? What is it about being resident in this society that causes so many people to behave in this way?

Just because some harmful substances are sadly legal (I'm talking tobacco here) doesn't mean we should legalise any more dangerous substances. It's time all the sad addicts who can't get a grip on their lives without alcohol, tobacco or drugs shaped up and got some pride back into their lives.

Unfortunately, you could grow your own and not have to pay tax on it. How on earth would the economy survive with the loss of revenue from binge drinking.
For those that see smoking as damaging to health, perhaps we should turn off all the power stations that turn out millions of tonnes of polution each year and ban cars and not allow anyone to have a coal fire to keep themselves warm. Lets all freeze to death and eat rotten food and live in filth and squalour. How healthy would that be.

Looks like Yanks and Brits can have something in common after all. But not to many ever research MJ to see what the real pros and cons are. As in many things if you are going to be for or against something, at least know the facts behind your beliefs and don't just follow like a sheep

Pot smokers tend to be passive, but imbibers of alcohol can wreak a lot of havoc, e.g. drunk driving, before they pass out. Alcohol is addictive, while there is no conclusive proof that pot is.
That said, one should not blame all drinkers for actions of those few who overdo it.
