The proper way is dress in somber colors , the best is in black. You should wear somethings conservative, no short nor party-like clothes. Wear clothes that you would go to a job's interview.

There really is no specific dress code. However, dress more formally than jeans and a tee shirt out of respect for the family. Wearing slacks and a nice shirt for a man and a dress or slacks and a top for a woman is perfectly acceptable. Just be sure whatever you do wear is muted and is not flashy in color.

Black is the traditional color for mourning. If you have a black or dark suit wear that along with an appropriate colored shirt (white is o.k.) along with a tie.
Women should wear dark colors as well.
However, if you do not have these types of clothes or clothing, wear something NICE like nice pants and a shirt with a tie. Women should wear something nice as well- dark colored pants with a nice blouse.
The family will be happy you took the time to come.
Just don't come in shorts and t-shirts. Totally inappropriate.

Depends on the family. I'd say something conservative, but if there is also going to be a funeral service, save the suit and black dress for that. My whole family just wore jeans and nice sweaters to my father's funeral and wore the traditional black for the funeral. Other families might want people to get very dressed up for a viewing, but we were just there to be with eachother and suits and dresses just weren't very important that day.

Perhaps nice pants, a dress shirt, and tie. If you have a suit, that would be really nice. I realize the person who is dead won't care what you wear, but his/her family members may appreciate the trouble you go to to look nice.

I would wear something that would be appropriate to wear to the funeral. In other words - not really a great time for shorts and flip-flops. You could wear some slacks though.
Main thing is that you are there to honor the dead, and so the point is to not wear your "party" outfit, but to wear something respectful.

conservative, dark, coat and tie with dark shoes like wingtips
unless it's a freak show, no visible piercings and cover tattoos
to head off your outrage about the piercings and tattoos, the wake/viewing is a conservative event that is about the family suffering the loss and not about you.
