They don't -- they were bred for warm climates. In the winter they would freeze their little ***es off if left outside.

It is up to the owner to protect the poor little dog with the big dog attitude and here are two reasons.
The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days
The Chihuahua tendency to shiver or tremble is not a health issue but takes place when the dog is excited or stressed. One explanation is the toy dogs have a higher metabolism and so dissipate body heat faster than larger dogs. Shivering helps to generate body heat – that’s why people shiver when we are cold. However, rapid dissipation of body heat is a distinct disadvantage in cool or cold climates, so Chihuahuas should always be protected when taken outdoors in these areas. Fortunately, there are dozens of styles of protective sweaters available.

They go to the store and buy an electric blanket and drink hot chocolate. Winter hell my chihauhau gets cold if the temperature goes down on a coll fall day. He has a cage in the house with a blanket in it to keep him warm but most the time he sits on someones lap or sits next to a heater vent to stay warm. They are not meant for cold weather even the long hairs.

They dont. I have a chiweenie that is small. He wears a coat during the winter because he has a single layer of fur that isnt very thick. Also all of my dogs wear booties outside to keep their feet from getting too cold or burning when its hot outside.

i had a pet chihuahua when i was a kid. he loved to snuggle when it was cold out. he insisted on going potty outside with the big boys even in the winter, but made it like 6 feet from the porch, did his business and ran back in the house. he would shiver for several minute after, i would use the hair dryer on him to dry and warm him quicker, he loved it. he wouldn't wear the cute lil doggie clothes but had soft fuzzy baby blankets in his doggie bed. they totally depend on us to see they have what they need to stay warm.

By relying on their owners to see to their needs. Kidding aside, they have very little hair, and usually very little body mass. Therefore it is important to keep them warm by keeping them inside most of the time, and how about a cute little coat to wear out to go potty?

it really has to do with their body heat and their hair, like most warmblooded animals they use their bodys to serculat heat, humens do the same along with many others being samll is easyer becase it takes less time to stemulat the heat. but the breed wasnt made for cold climates so they need to stay indoors if its cold out.
