Ok, so my dog has fleas. She's a husky, and I want to take her to the vet. But my mom says she's not paying another $100 to visit the vet and get all the meds. So what do I do now? I can't drive to Petsmart and get K9Advantage, and my mom's just too lazy to go and I'm afraid she'd say no if I ask her to get the meds. Help?

Give your dog to someone who is willing to take care of it. Your family obviously isn't. Your poor dog...

Well, you can wash the dog in dishsoap, but thats only a temporary solution. RINSE WELL if you do that. Tell your mom that soon your house will be infested with fleas, and the only way to get rid of them is to use Advantage for at LEASE 3 months in a row. That should not cost $100. Maybe $50, at the most.
2nd, how do you know the dog has ticks? Can you see them? If it has ticks, you need to put on a Frontline, which kills fleas AND ticks. Advantage only kills fleas. You can pull the ticks out yourself if your dog will hold still, but you have to be sure to get the entire thing off, head and all, or it will cause an absess that could get infected, then you will be spending alot more than $100.

Try to convince your mom that she can buy a few months worth of Frontline or Advantage now, or she can let the problem progress for a few months until the entire house is bombarded with fleas, and your whole family is covered in little red bumps. At least you are trying to help your dog, and you sound more mature than your mother. If she still wont help, I'd call around some animals shelters in your area and explain the situation to them. They may be able to help you, or maybe they could find a home for your dog that would be willing to take care of it better than your mom does.

HEY wanna know a secret? I do this with my dogs since I dont believe in other things. First can you go to like safeway or something? Get some borax and some dawn dish soap (original). If you can find it, get some Main n' Tail (usually called main n' tail and body. Can be found at sally's and sometimes other stores. otherwise just get pet conditioner at the store)

Sprinkle some borax on your carpet in the house and in your yard. Wash pet's bedding with it.

Give your girlie a bath using the dish soap (if you have the main and tail or other conditioner...use it after you have washed off the soap since the dawn is killing fleas but drying the skin a bit too). Vaccuum the carpet. The borax also kills fleas but isnt so skin friendly.

This is a much cheaper method.
Borax is about $5 if not cheaper
Dawn is waaay cheaper
Main N' Tail is about $15 for 20oz in some places. I use it on my pets all the time

how old are you?
if your not old enough to drive maybe a neighbor or friend can bring you to the places you need to go.
if you don't have any money try earning some by helping out. like doing lawns or carrying groceries at the market. stuff like that. sometimes if you volunteer at your local shelter they can give you meds for fleas and ticks.
it does not cost a 100 bucks for flea meds. you will pay more money by using collars, powder, dips and sprays just because you have to use it more often. advantage, frontline and revolution work wonderfully and though they cost more up front they only have to be used once a month and help to keep your pet safe. and yourself. if your dog has ticks that is dangerous for humans as well as pets. tick bites can be deadly.
fleas do not get stuck in your skin like ticks do. they are nuisance pests and breed like nuts. they are not hard to control as long as your willing to spend a little. fleas also carry diseases. you can pick the existing fleas and ticks off and flush them.
if no one in your family is willing to go the little extra to help your pet then maybe you should think about finding another home with someone who will.
good luck.

Honey I'm sorry about your situation. But fleas and ticks can make a dog very sick. You may want to find a good home for your dog and wait until your old enough and on your own before you get another dog. It sounds like your the parent and if you could you would help your dog. Please don't let this go if your mom wont help the responsible thing is to find a good home.

Dawn dish soap. Not the ultra or flowery scents, just the regular. Soap her up with it (it smothers fleas). Leave her lathered up for 5 minutes or so, and rinse those dead fleas down the drain. You might want to use conditioner afterward, because Dawn takes the natural oil out of the skin. Better than dog flea shampoo and cheaper! But you need to find where they are coming from, because she will just get them again. You can get some Raid Flea spray at the dollar store and spray her bed, and where she hangs around.

You need to get Frontline Plus for your dog. It will kill the fleas and ticks. You get a 3 month supply and it should cost you under 50.00. Call around to pet stores and find out. You dont need a vet to tell you your dog has fleas and ticks. If you buy the cheap stuff you will regret it. Its cheap for a reason, so use Frontline Plus. Its really good stuff for fleas, ticks flea eggs and chewing lice.

One spot or frontline should break the cycle dogs bedding should be changed there is a product called staykill which is sprayed around the home which works for around 12 months ticks can be removed by alcohol its important to get the whole tick out not to leave pincers etc as your online search for relevant products you owe it to yourself and the dog to be aware of relevant factors owning a dog dosent always have to be costly to keep it in good health

pull out all ticks and fleas. thats what i do. my dog never went to the vet before and hes not going to. whenever you find some ticks or fleas, just use a pair of pliers and pull them out. its a little hard though if your dog wont cooperate. just find some way to pull them out

ps. my friend once got fleas all over his legs, he pulled them out with pliers too. lots of holes in his legs now. dont let that happen to you
