I am looking to get back into shape and decided to take up brazilian jiu jitsu because lifting and running is getting boring to me. I am not in terrible shape but also not the best of my life. Just wondering for thos of you in the know how hard is BJJ and what is it like going into with only a wrestling background. Basically any info for a beginner would be helpful thank you.

Well, as a wrestler, BJJ should come easily to you. You got the takedowns and defense right there. You just gotta learn the basic positions (guard, half, side, full mount, n/s, back) Wrestlers are usually very fast transitioners and they have great conditioning. As for not liking lifting and running, thats something you should get over. You wanna keep your cardio up because grappling is tiring. You also wanna stay strong, BJJ utilizes leverage, but strength still goes along way.

Maybe you could lift 3 days a week 90mins and Run 3 days for 30-45 mins. I don't know about your previous schedule but I think that is a good balance.

Ohh, and you should be doing pushups, pullups and situps to muscle failure x2 everyday.

BJJ will help u get back into shape, there's no doubt about that. But BJJ alone will probably not suffice. If u are just starting BJJ and u have a wrestling background, ull do just fine. The training in BJJ will be difficult that i can assure u. Ull spend a lot of time trying out techniques with ur fellow students and thats probably not gonna substitute ur lack of cardio (u said u wont run). If u are serious about getting back in shape start cardio immediately, lifting weights, that can wait for later if u don feel like doin it now. Run, skip rope, cycle, stairmaster, do whatever u don get bored at cos ur gonna need it

BJJ can be a good work out when you spar. If you go to a school that spars everyday or does conditioning everyday then you are on the right track.

A lot of BJJ schools work so much technique that it does not provide a work out. If that is the case, continue home workouts.

To keep things from getting boring, watch t.v. while you lift. For your cardio, do different exercises.

Do sprints one day
Do cycling another
Do swimming another
Run stairs/hills
Play racquetball
Play basketball

You get the picture

Be Blessed

P.S. Most wrestlers have trouble transitioning from pinning to submitting. You will need to work on that. I love sparring wrestlers for that reason. I have a JJ Friend that hates sparring wrestlers because they are never still. If you can submit on the move you will be awesome.
