how do I know if I have a "dry socket"? Every once in a while I get a shooting pain, is this normal or should I go in and get it checked out??

A dry socket is:

Any socket in which a patient is having pain due to the loss of the blood clot thus exposing the bone to air, food, and fluids along with an offensive odor. This often occurs two or more days after an extraction and can last about 5-6 days. It is normal to have soreness and discomfort following an extraction.
However, pain should be lessening by the second day.

This condition exist when a blood clot is dislodged from the surgery site thus exposing the bone and fine nerve endings. The blood clot helps in the stopping of bleeding and lays the foundation or framework for new tissue and bone to develop over a two-month healing process. This condition is more common in the mandibular area and in back teeth due to poorer circulation in this area, with wisdom teeth being the most common site. Dry socket delays the healing process.

It usually takes gum tissue about 3-4 weeks to heal where as the bone can take up to six months to heal

Your should go in the the dentist or at least call him, you could be just starting to get a dry socket, but left untreated, the pain is un-bearable, it is worse than an abcess, or you may have a piece of food trapped up or down in the unhealed part, or it could be as simple as your bones coming together to close up the wound where the tooth was removed. Either way a phone call isn't going to hurt ,you really don't want to get a dry socket., with those you never just get a shooting pain, the whole side of your face swells up and like I said the pain is un-bearable and does not go away and come back, it is constant. And usuallly it happens in the middle of the night when you can't get ahold of your dentist. The main answer is don't wait , get it checked NOW.

Dry sockets hurt and smell and taste really foul. They usally aren't evident until 4 or 5 days out. I'd give the occasional shooting pain a couple more days before getting too concerned about it. You just had surgery and it takes time to feel better. It's usually at least 3 weeks or more before you feel "normal" if everything goes right.

If you have a dry socket you will know it. It causes excruciating pain and the socket takes forever to heal. I've had them and they are no fun. A shooting pain is normal and comes and goes while you are healing.

you will get pain and all that for about a week, and then if there is a nasty taste coming out of it you may have DS, but if you hold peroxide in your mouth for a few seconds and spit and do it again and try to get it into the sockets you should be fine, DO NOT SWOLLOW THE peroxide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! call the dentist and ask them if the pain is normal!
