1--laughter. Laughing makes your belly muscles contract.
2--workaholics. People who feel compelled to work and feel guilty relaxing or taking a break--so they have to take a vacation so they don't feel guilty about relaxing and taking time off from work or school or whatever.

Since these lines are out of context with the story, I have no idea. I would have to have at least read the paragraph in which they appear, in order to figure out what the writer is trying to say. Post again and give more detail.
