I strongly disagree with what the Pope has said.
Could he not find quotes from Thomas Carlyle, Sir William Muir, Edward Gibbon, John Davenport, Count Tolstoy, Bernard Shaw, Rev. Bosworth Smith, Pringle Kennedy or S. P. Scott? These respectable western writers have completely opposite views from that which was quoted by the Pope.
It is unjust and totally incorrect to say that Islam has bought misery to the world and that Islam was spread by the sword! There is a huge difference between how Islam and Christianity were spread, and it’s funny how some Christian writers have forgotten the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition – or is it that they are so ashamed of this so they attribute it to Islam? Or is the real reason to stop the fastest growing religion on the planet? Which by the way is spreading in the same peaceful way it did when the Holy Prophet of Islam, the saviour for mankind graced this planet with his presence.
Pope – if you’re on cyberspace and reading this, then I suggest you curb the violence that so called Christians in your community are committing – they will give Christians a bad name, media permitting of course! The media are playing a huge role in this propaganda, attempting to turn civilisations; cultures and way of living against one another. Just look at the violence that Bush and Blair are committing - a defensive war against terror? That’s got to be good right? But then why did the word terrorists become linked with Islam? How did the word Islamist come about? Why this attack on Islam? Why all this talk about open dialog and understanding? If that’s what you really want then talk! Don’t rub Muslims up the wrong way and then expect to talk.
At the same time, Muslims out there don’t fall into this trap, don’t be victimised by this attack and attempt on slandering your peaceful, loving Religion, you have your voice, so speak out and always remember - the Holy Prophet was kind and respectful to even his enemies who were bent upon wiping out Islam. The second most important method to stop such attacks on Islam is your prayers. Pray that Allah unites Muslims, Pray that this type of propaganda against Islam does not cast its evil eye on any Muslims, resulting in disgruntled Muslims taking up arms – this is not a time for violence, it’s a time for talk, understanding and Prayers!!
Finally Pope, please take peoples sentiments into account before making any comments on Islam, especially with the current climate and situation of the Islamic World. If you truly want to bridge an understanding then please first study the true teaching of Islam and then look at beauty and similarities of Christianity and Islam – You’ll be surprised to know that we are not worlds apart!

IT CANNOT be yes or no --- You have not obviously read the speech, but just the media hype. In his address, he read a QUOTATION from the past - so those words everyone is getting excited about were not his words, his feelings, his thoughts AT ALL. So, anyone responding a simple yay or nay to your "poll" has not be informed properly! And because you said you don't want to hear what we say means you have not read the original either. Go to BBC on line, they have the full text there, as I'm sure other reputable websites do. Don't go for the drama!
