Information war is the art of molding the public opinion to support your side of the war while making your adversary look as bad as possible. What we call information war is what up until the end of the cold war was known as propaganda.
Examples:
1. Your enemy is of a specific religious affiliation. You get your own experts of that religion to go on TV and say that your adversaries are not trully following the faith and are heretic.
2. Your enemy understands that you are very vulnerable to whatever the newspapers and tv news channels report on the war. They stage events that make you look bad. For example, go to a school, kill everyone with the same kind of weapons used by your armed forces, then try to make the world see that YOUR forces did it.
3. The enemy spreads the word that your soldiers hate their religion and that they will murder anyone they meet from that religion, including women and children. This means the locals will cooperate less.
Etc.

Information warfare, what really wins war. I know you have heard of "Winning the hearts and minds"? Thats exactly what it is. It is taking information and turning it against the enemy. Another name for it is propaganda.
It is also all about getting the information, accurate and reliable information, to use and track down the enemy. The more either side has, the better chance of winning.

Safeguarding information that may be detrimental to the success of a mission while finding out more about the enemy's potential capabilities and weaknesses to exploit in order to defeat them. That would be the gist of information warfare.

Some groups claim that the government is keeping secrets from us or spreading lies. So they call it a war.
Problem is, there is rarely legitimate sources to back up the claims.
