pico has it right. Full degree, some hard science major, some colleges or universities actually have a pre-med major. You have to get good grades, like 3.5 or better. Then you take the MCAT and get a good grade on that. Then you apply to medical schools. Should you get accepted it is four years (2 years didactic/2 years clinical). Lots of standardized and non-standardized tests in all four years. At the end, you take a FLEX exam, federal licensure exam.

After that you apply to residency programs. Most of the plastics programs require at least one year gen surgery rotation. You must be VERY competitive (ie better than all the others) to be considered for a plastics position. Different programs have different numbers of years, but for the most part it will take you six or seven years after medical school to complete. Then you have to take national board certification exams. They vary between one and three days, depending on specialty.

THEN you are ready to be a plastic surgeon. Best wishes. Sure is THE glamor job these days, isn't it?

You can major in whatever you want, as long as you take the pre-med courses the medical schools require. Of course, this is easier with a science major, since most of the pre-med courses are in science. For plastic surgery, after you graduate from medical school, you have to do a general surgery internship/residency (5-6 yrs) and then complete a plastic surgery fellowship (3 yrs, I believe). Some fellowship programs may require just a few years of general surgery. In any case, it's a long haul. Good luck.
