It will really hamper the training you have already done, if you allow him to stay in because of rain.. Is there a covered area that he can go to? Otherwise, you can begin training him now to wear the booties and sweaters that you can get at any pet supply shop..Or, keep a towel at the door ( I do) .My firend keeps towel and a spray to wash the feet..

He is an animal. Animals are made to deal with weather. Mud is not a problem for an animal, but it IS a problem for you with your synthetic cultural mindset. Since he is already trained to go outside you should let him continue to do that, mud or no mud, regardless of how you happen to feel about it. He is happy with the mud, and you should share that happiness with him. The next time he goes out in the mud, you should go outside and get horribly muddy with him.

WOW! A puppy thats trained already is a definite plus. I would grab the umbrella and take the dog for a walk in a less muddy place and suffer a little. I think having towels by the front door for such occassions is very good. My dogs go on a leash with a tug (they hate getting wet or cold) but will go if I go, so I go! I never let them get in mud, not that I have to try very hard with that, but the puppy sometimes likes a little trouble if she can find it. I simply "escort" her to more appropiate places. Good luck with your very smart puppy!

You could carry him outdoors on a leash when it's muddy. Use an umbrella. Also, put something inside the door for him to wipe his feet, and a nice towel to wipe him down. Don't leave him wet. I hope it doesn't rain too much where you are, at least until the puppy is a bit bigger and easier to handle.

If it is the mess of the dog that you are worried about teach him the word "stand" so that you can dry him off with a towel before he comes back inside. If it is because he doesn't like the feel of the mud he will get use to it.
No dog should ever, in my opinion, be trained to pee, or poo in the house. NASTY!! Good luck.

We just deal with the mud. Is it that much of a problem?! We have four dogs and we don't care! Just, dont let him/her out when it rains. Make them go before it rains then if it potty's on the floor give it a slight pop and tell the dog "NO!"

My back yard gets very muddy too. I take my dog in the front yard when it gets like that. It's not too often its muddy so it doesn't stink your front yard too much. If you dont have a spot in your yard that doesnt get muddy, it looks like you're gonna have to deal with the mud. Good luck!

I have this very large (45 lbs) dog that races around the fence line barking at people. The dirt track in the wet season turns her into a mudball. I now spread the grass clippings over the "track" and I am training her to not run and bark at passers by. Other than this I keep a bucket and wash rag by the door and give her a quick swipe.

Keep him going outside even if its muddy and wet, My beagles have a real problem with snow, I just keep a couple towels by the door, and dry them.
Then they each have throws I made for them, I cuddle them up in the throws and they are dry and warm in no time.
try it it really works well!
