I feel like she snoozes too much, more because I don't have a ton of time to play with her, but I want to make sure there's not something else going on that makes her nap so much! She will rest or take short naps that add up to around 5-7 hours during a typical day, but she's always energetic when I suggest a walk, and she gets really excited throwing a ball. Just wanted to make sure I'm giving her enough exercise to be happy and that she's not bored to death at night in her crate because she wasn't active enough in the daytime. Thanks!

No worries,,,sigh. It's a baby,,,BUT it also evolves, matures, and tires at a much faster rate through life than any human.

For example,,, A cat can sleep as much as 20 hours a day, and be very ok active the other 4.

Pets get the sleep they need, unless disturbed, and exercise is a good thing for a puppy. That dog will let you know when it's had enough. More important than sleep time, is awake time, and a variety of experiences the animal can be involved in. No offense regarding throwing a ball,,, But I have to bet even a dog is OVER it after 2 dozen times,,, and likely lasts longer at it, than the owner really wanted to,,,smiles.

They are also very adaptable,,,and usually to OUR schedule. They like quiet time as much as we do, and will grow into making up their own schedules,,,as long as you comply.

We got an Australian Shepherd puppy at six weeks old. She demanded attention almost 24/7. I ask my husband if she would ever sleep more. I will say that she went in her open metal cage without any trouble and slept through the night right away when we got her. She's now six months old and takes naps all throughout the day and prefers a quiet place to get away from our talking, etc. She even lets us sleep late on the weekends. Betsy will come to us throughout the day and bark for attention. I told my husband she needs validation about every hour. They demand attention, playing with them and plenty of exercise. Australian Shepherds are extremely smart and they are easily trained if you work with them. I trained Betsy to go get her leash in two days. When you do have time to play with her, play intensively and love her to death. She will forgive you when you don't. If you don't have a KONG, rubber open ended baby sitter, get one and stuff it with treats, it's a great baby sitter when you're busy. They work so hard trying to get the treats out--dog sausages, little treat bones. I think our Aussie sleeps about 5 hrs. off and on throughout the day. Good luck! :-)

Most puppies and dogs sleep on an average of 18 hours a day. Good luck.

Dogs like children need and want as much sleep as they can get.
Our two beagles sleep all the time. No worries.

That is very typical sleeping hours. As long as she doesnt stay asleep for that long don't worry. Babies sleep a lot when their born don't they? Think of your puppy of a newborn baby.

well i think you should let him or her sleep about3-4 hours only so let him play and get exercise the rest of the day. the dog is probley excited to go on a walk or play because the rest of the day it is bored so it just sleeps.
