With Patience it takes time but once you get there you'll love every minute. Learn to paddle and duck dive properly it saves a lot of energy. If you've got friends that surf already go with them. Also if you live in the UK the best times to go are March to June then Sept to Nov, After Nov you'll need a winter suit. Just enjoy it and good luck.
