Leogirl, everytime I hear from you, you continue to amaze me with your denial of reality.

from the replies so far, we truly have lost our moral compass. God PLEASE save America because we cannot or will not do it ourselves.

Patrick Quinn does not sound like a Muslim name, why do you think this person is not PRO-US? Just because he's revealing truth of what we are actually doing?

Mr Quinn has covered rather a lot of very similar ground here,
but it is a good starting point for a debate....

Will the existing state of detention centers and the policy's that keep them filled up have an effect on the number of insurgents?
Will the changes to a more humane (and you have to use that term loosely) methods have an impact? will the perception of the camps change whether they are in either US or Iraqi hands?

How the heck am i to cover this one in short of ten thousand words?

OK, here go's:

I think the number of insurgents will continue to rise irrespective of the currant detention issue... but that detention in its present form will be a constant agrivating factor.

The stance of a number of iranian groups (with tacit support from the government) is becoming increasingly beligerent so incresed she'ite support across the border will be an unfortunate fact of life. the Detention issue (that it exist!) will only make it worse.

The local problem is just a mess... winning hearts and minds is not easy ... but when your running a police state which the locals hate and do not consider fair or evenhanded, you might as well just shoot em out of hand because they will hate you either way.

In Malaya the british (my uncle included) used the new village policy to great effect and we were also very carefull to segregate military and police area's of operation.... in short, If you move people out of areas of insurgent activity and into clean areas which you moniter v. carefully the insurgents are stumpted.
If you use local police to effect all arrests and detentions you lessen the percieved image of peacekeeping troops from monsters to protectors. if you make sure the new villages ( or in the case of citys "new suberbs" are clean, safe and well stocked with amenities the displaced will not moan over much!!!!!

If you let the local police behave like a pack of wild dogs then you are well and truely stuffed. You must garrenty the basic principles of law... judges and court rooms and due-process.
do this and the insurgents will have a harder time spreading their propaganga.

The fact is that once you take a man or woman of the street and put them in captivity they are never going to forget it! If you take thousands off the streets then the whole region will not forget it!!
You must, MUST limit the number of detainee's and keep the number of new arrests down to a minimum...and for gods sake get the CIA mission back on track... MORE OBSERVATION, MORE INFILTRATION AND MORE MONEY FOR INFORMERS AND OTHER SUCH PURPOSES.

let the suspects continue to walk free! they will lead you to their chums! Do not provide and endless streem of new recruits from your released prisoners, treet detainees like royalty! show them that its down right profitable to be your friends (The native arab self interest gene works for us rather then against us).

I hate to say it, but as a military historean and defense writer i have to say that we are more or less screwed. We have ****** this one up right royaly.

You want a solution? here are two:

1. Leave and protect our borders because you cant fight terrorism by knocking down whole regions (terrorists tend to move).

2. Stay and build a lot of air tight shower rooms and find some very old germans to show you how they work... you could call it the final solution? But i warn you, you will need a lot of them because the moment you pull that one out as a viable option the entire muslim world ( all one Billion of them) will turn Terrorist.

OK, there we are.

PS.... did most of the people before me even read the article?

My answer to your question is that this will cause those persons who want to spread violence yet another reason to justify their cause. All you need to do these days is look outside or read the news to find something. It is the commonplace mentality in today's society.

As with all news, you must consider the source. We both know this was not written by a pro US newsperson.
One person's opionion, fact based or not, will differ from another's. i.e. I doubt some of the surviving family of those lost in the 9-11 attacks would read this article and have the same emotional reaction as you or I.

Just a quick fact.
Torturing anyone/thing is wrong and inhumane.

Not that much! You see, insurgency is like drug addiction, either you're a junkie or you're not. If your concern is the furor that it will cause amongst potential insurgents, have no fear. These damn fools have a way, no matter what, of absolutely despising the US, for any reason.

It could be a damn good tool n keeping these fanatics in tow! You see, the horror stories of being locked up , by the US, for months and years on end, may instill just enough fear in these fanatics to keep them in line.

We are too soft on these bastards to begin with. In WWII, we started winning when we adopted the same evil on our enemy as they did on us. That being said, we should be chopping a few necks, just like the scum we are fighting does, in this way they know, we can be as evil as they are, it would make a difference.

No, I do not think there will be an increase. These insurgents do not need a reason to pursue their cause. They hate us simply for existing and they always will. If they had no incitement whatsoever, they would still continue on as rebels without a cause.

As for the article, what a load of crap. I wrote better short stories for my 12th grade English class.

You can not change what is instilled in a person from birth. We all think we are right in our way of life. Were we right in invading Iraq, only history will tell. Will finish what we started, doubt it. Were we over-confidient, yes - The two battles were different. See what Hollywood says - watch "Red Dawn". Just reverse the roles and you'll understand.

Read the Patriot Act now, and you'll get a REAL good idea of what AMERICAN CITIZENS are in for. Our civil rights, liberties, right to due process (under certain conditions), and protections from unfair treatment by our own government have been SEVERLY compromised.

The Patriot Act REDEFINED America, what we represent, and what rights we have as citizens. Our forefathers are turning in their graves; we have thrown away the very things they fought for.

I'm more concerned with preventing terrorists from striking our civilian population. Do you honestly believe that these enemies are "made" by our actions or interrogation procedures? This enemy is cunning.
They use our rules and freedoms.

Sounds like the media is going for the all out attack on America. I have no problem with what the military is doing. The security in Iraq has been turned over completely to Iraq. If Iraq wants us to leave we will. Very simple. Any idiot can see this is just another liberal attack.

The article is just reiterating what insurgents have already known. It is also what the country needs to recognize that it is time for those being held to learn their fate.

this is an unwinnable war ............ if you can't win the hearts and minds of the population, how then can you claim to be their liberator. and with every door being busted open in the middle of the night, every time a bus was stopped and passengers shoved and searched at gunpoint, every village thats bulldozed, we are losing more and more support and the no. of insurgents will definitely swell. let's put it this way .......... u were one of the passenger on the bus ........ you were rifle butted ........ strip search......made to lie on ground and eat dirt by the invaders........ and this is your country ........ what would you do?
