I suspect that the 35mm transparency film they use has a much higher level of detail (more high-definition).

I suspect one day, the digital cameras will be able to capture images high-res enough ... but for now, the image quality is lower.

Keep in mind that the folks at National Geographic pride themselves on their photo work. It's a key part of their magazine, and their company ... so they take the quality very seriously

Niether one of your theories.

Film cameras offer much more deffinition than digital cameras.

Digital camersas often go up to 6, 7, 10 megapixels, but
Ontheother hand... Some camera effects can not be reached with digital cameras, these can only be offered by film... That's why movies are shot in film...

Digital cameras are usually for familiy photos and snap shots... Film-type cameras are for pro's

Large format film has the ability to better capture and reproduce the images better than digital. Film has a warmer look and a more natural feel than digital and even if there was such a thing as a 25 megapixel camera, it still would not be as sharp and clear as film.

The benefits of film are, for NG Photographers,.. very much more worth it than to use digital,.. for example,.. the quality of 35mm film images is considerably greater than even the highest resolution digital cameras,.. so, it's best to use 35mm film, (or even some of them use medium format),... the tones are more accurate, the image will be sharper, and probably the equipment is a tad better in some way,...

Because when you have been using the same type of equipment for years, decades, you master it, allowing the photographer to put their visions on film. Switching to digital would require time to relearn how to shoot for that medium.

They use the tools that they are most comfortable using. Many of my friends, such as the one's you are talking about, have many refridgerators full of color slide film in the deep freeze in there garages! They stand on their quality work and KODACHROME film that gives them the National Geograpic look! Beautiful Warm tones and awesome colors....MAMA don't take my KODACHROME away!!! such as the song goes! Digital is close but no bananna!
